Armageddon was a town in current day Israel that was attacked, laid siege to, and sacked by the egyptian army.

Saw a discovery channel show about it recently. I guess I should have learned or read about it before, but there are always gaps.

It is another name for the plain of Megiddo in Israel where the battle at the Second Coming will be fought. It is rendered Har-Magedon in Revelation.

It's from the Bible, specifically Revelation, Chapter 16, verse 16. It is believed to be actually Megiddo, near the Valley of Jezreel, in present day Israel. Napoleon once described it as the perfect battlefield. The Isrealites and others have fought many battles there. The Apostle John saw a vision (the "Revelation") that all the armies of the earth will be gathered there, and heaven's armies will wipe them out.

After that, Christ will return to earth. Even in secular circles, it has come to symbolize the final battle between good and evil. Biblical scholars will tell you that this is not truly the final battle, though. After Christ and His followers rule for 1000 years, there is yet another battle described in Revelation, Chapter 20: 7-10, when Satan and his armies are finally crushed.

Har Megiddo...a battle cry issued from the fortified (from time of Joshua) town of Megiddo in the central plains of Israel, prophesied to be the site of a future great battle between good and evil.

It means literally "the sting of 1000 mosquitoes in the armpit".
