Md. Bomb Squad Investigates Suspicious Package

GAITHERSBURG, Md. Montgomery County police and school officials have evacuated an elementary school, day care center and church in Gaithersburg while a bomb squad investigates a suspicious device across the street from the school.

Montgomery County Police spokeswoman Nancy Nickerson says students from Rachel Carson Elementary School have been taken to the nearby Quince Orchard High School. She says students were evacuated as a precaution and are all O.K.

From there, school officials will determine whether school will be dismissed early.

County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer says the bomb squad is using a robot to investigate the suspicious device. He says they believe it's an improvised explosive devise. It was found around 12:30 in a park in the middle of Kent Island Circle in the Kentlands section of Gaithersburg.

But Piringer says there have been no related threats reported to investigators.

"IED" could mean just about anything. I used IED's as a kid to blow up plastic model cars as I pushed them down the driveway.

Hell, we had a 17 year old in our area who was recently found with 6 pipe bombs in the trunk of his car. He was charged with 6 counts of possesion of weapons of mass destruction.

It gives the cops a way to justify spaending money on those cute little robot things and also gives them a chance to run around a neighborhood and run people out of their homes.

FNC - robot trying to get to it under a bench.

Probably a dirty diaper or a baggie of poo.

We stopped at an historical marker the other day and some creatin left a baggie of what looked like dog poo (didn't investigate that closely) right on the marker. People are so disgusting now days.

It's probably a peanut butter sandwich and a banana in a Spongebob Squarepants lunch box.

Thanks! I should've thought about looking on WTOP's site.

It's not the neighborhood I grew up in after all.

Hope it all turns out well.

evacuated an elementary school, day care center and church

The robot appeared to be in front of a church. That is what caught my eye. Maybe nothing, maybe something. There was a string of accidental church fires in Alabama this morning....

Sounds like they parroted Pete Piringer.

That kinda has a neat ring to it.

If you totally disrupt a Catholic service by screaming, is your voice a "weapon of mass destruction"?

At least it wasn't another geocache...

They blew one up here in the city not too long ago. It had some interesting magnets in it.

IED is a loaded term.

That may be, but since it stands for Improvised Explosive Device, it probably fits this thing better than most of the ones in Iraq. The latter use real professionaly produced explosives, and increasing professionally produced detonators and control devices as well. This thing, whatever it turns out to be is probably a whole lot more Improvised.
