US is developing a gunship that could literally obliterate enemy ground targets with a laser beam.

Execpt you forget the Flash has a laser that will shoot down the mortar, back calculate the point of origin, and either direct an airborne laser to take it out or fire GPS guided mortars to counter.

"... Next year we will start issuing phrasers and light sabers to the troops."

Then we can issue plain robes instead of body armor.

I'd be in favor of relaxing grooming restrictions so Marines could have beards and pony-tails.

Ignignoc: Mooninites unite!
Err: Lock in!
Ignignoc: No one can defeat the quad-laser!
Err: It is over now!
Ignignoc: The bullet is enormous, there is no escaping!
Err: Jumping...is useless!

They made a movie about that 20 years ago starring Val Kilmer.

One of my faves!

You'd have to have a very good mirror. If it reflected only 99%, it wouldn't be enough. The mirror would just explode and you'd still have a laser, but with nice melty shrapnel.

The howitzer would do more collateral splash damage and the laser would be more of a precise direct fire weapon. I see the US military using both because both are needed.

Good time to get into the business of anti-laser defense systems.

Umm, I really don't think lightsabers would be very practical. I can just see the training accidents... "hey ya'll watch this... SLICE! ... ooowwie.. "

"The US military learns from its wars and gets better and better all the time."

True. Too bad the State Department keeps getting worse, and, to an extent, canelling them out.

Hmmm...depending on the 'laser'. I guess the key thing would be the amount of weight saved. Give more air time and maybe let the spectre fly alittle higher.

I'm kinda partial to a good photon torpedo now and then.

Probably manufactured in China.
