I judge a State's leaders by the condition of the Sate's roadways... Virginia's roads suck! 'Nuff said.

All of which was a complete fairy tale. The state ended the 2004 fiscal year with a surplus of over $400 million, before the tax increase took effect. That surplus eventually grew to $2 billion, proving that talk of a looming budget deficit was completely false.

One of his successor’s first acts? Another tax increase.

The main reason for the strong economic growth in VA is that GWB has increased the size of the federal government so fast in the aftermath of 911.

Yes, there are some poor roads in Virginia – but the solution isn’t in just tossing more money at them. I do like the idea of limiting VDOT in the repair and building area. Its planning and supervision of contractors is a joke. Much more could be done for far less money with adequate contracting.

Thinking like that would justify a larger tax increase. How else do you fix the highways?

Not to rain on your parade, but here in Texas, I-35 is one of the worst roads I've ever driven, and that's only the start. On the other hand, California's road planning & design has been a model to copy for decades, developing any number of safety & accident prevention devices. On that same note, Indiana drivers are scary & confusing, while drivers in Chicago, IL navigate the Dan Ryan without incident at speeds 20-30+ mph faster than anyone in another state would ever dare try.

And then there is Florida...PACKED WITH OLD PEOPLE.

If he gets elected President he'll really have to throw money at government to beat the rates of increase occurring over the past 5 years.

Great article to send to so many who think he has a chance. The one interview I heard, he wouldn't answer any questions about going forward and what he would do in circumstances...so what's new with the D's...just Bush Bashing day and night...does that really win elections? I don't hink so.

He's a Southern Governor.

Nothing else matters, really.

At least some Dems know that may their only hope.

You haven't driven until you've attempted the drive from Naval Station Norfolk to the beach between the hours of 1400 - 1800. Fricken insane these people.

The Virginia Miracle? Puh-lease!

Ah yes those state miracles.

(Dukakis) Buoyed by budget success and a rapidly expanding economy, he expanded state services and promoted the "Massachusetts Miracle" as a model for America in his 1988 run for the Presidency.

Transportation funding was taken out of the tax increase package. So Virginia's roads still need help.

Oh bite me!

Geez Louise. How many times do we have to beat this dead horse to death???

The people in No. Va. have been complaining about the roads for at least 20 years. Every last damn square inch of ground could be paved over and people would still holler for "more and better roads".

Until VDOT can prove to me that they can be trusted with our money, they should not receive one more nickel in state funds. NOT ANOTHER NICKEL!

At least Kaine isn't running for president.

Is he?

In fact, the roads have never been as bad in the last 50 years!

On the other hand, outside of the Northern VA area (which funds the State) they have new and rarely used roads.

The roads may or may not suck. The fault lies with VDOT - a bloated, mismanaged, wasteful sinkhole of taxpayer dollars. No more money for roads until VDOT cleans up its act.

I don't know where you get the idea that there are rarely used roads in VA. I-64 and I-81 are always quite busy.
