More to come....
...or abortion clinics...or GLADD offices...or PETA HQ, etc.
Christians get low priority on the hate scale...like white males.
"I was really sort of poking fun at a breaking news post that consists of a headline, with no story that promises "more to come". Since there was no story at all, I figured the "more to come" must be a prediction of additional arsonist activities."
Sorry about that....that should have been clear but I'm a little fuzzy today - working extra all week to make sure I get the whole weekend free.
Whether or not it was a hate crime, I know we won't hear it being possibly a hate crime from gays.
This is such a terrible thing!! I couldn't believe it when I heard it on the news this morning.
I hope whoever did it left plenty of clues for investigators. I wonder if they will be charged with a hate crime? I'm not going to hold my breath though.
"I agree, but if it were 5 synagogues or 5 mosques, it would be hate crime central coverage."
Yep. Big time media double standard. For that matter this won't get the same press as if it were 5 black Baptist churches.
Yes--evil is often simple. ..my first thought is a firebug, and firebugs like churches. But Southern Baptist churches? It speaks to an agenda. And six at once? Someone wants attn.
Que Moose and the APB for the Angry White Man in a White Box Van" (nobody POSTED that yet??)
Your information is old. It hasn't been a hate crime to torch a synagogue in YEARS.
Rehobeth Baptist Church was built in 1819 -- it has been completely destroyed.
Ashby Baptist Church was established in the 1870's, but it is unclear if the building is still the original building. I doubt it is as it looks like a brick building in the pictures I posted.
Old Union Baptist Church was built in 1886, and it suffered damage to furniture and carpeting. The fire was started in 2 flower pots below and American Flag that hangs in the sanctuary. Luckily two church members that live nearby had been called about the other fires that were happening and got to the church shortly after the fire there was set.
Look, I respect the SBC as serious Christians whose Anabaptist forbears were undoubtedly persecuted for their theological convictions. The SBC is one of the few organizations in the world standing between civilization and utter ruin today.
Inventing secret histories and conspiracy theories is entirely unnecessary and counterproductive and does nothing to burnish Bible believers' credentials.
My trust is in Him and in Him only, not in any church made up and ran by regular sinful humans, nor in any other authority of man's making.
I feel the exact same way, and I don't need to pretend that the Montanist and Albigensian pagans were actually Christians in order to make that claim.
But it's not Wednesday.
"I feel the exact same way, "
Good. I'm relieved to know that.
But Ingram said the fires late Thursday and early Friday destroyed both the churches of predominantly black congregations and predominantly white congregations.
How near is this to Birmingham? Isn't there a large Islamic "training camp" type setup there? I remember it from about 2 years ago when a former black panther leader was involved in shoot out. He had converted either in or after leaving prison and was working with an islamic community in rural Alabama near there.
"I'm Southern Baptist and the "split" you are referring to is news to me. I might add I'm an active Southern Baptist. Our splits usually only mean that more churches will be started, not burnt down."
News to me. It is a farily quiet denomination overall. We're busy building new churches.
SBC churches tend to accurately reflect the surrounding area racial makeup.
Oh, and don't forget the Baptist minister, the Rev-u-rund a-Jessie a-Jack...son....
Since the article doesn't mention race, I assume these aren't Black churches. If they were I guess it would be the biggest news story of the year.
Let's see who the suspects might be. A disgruntled Loner, perhaps? Disaffected youthful 'vandals'?
It is about 40 miles from downtown Birmingham. It is the rural fringes of the outermost suburbs.
