My guess would be 1300 people would be an official number. Are these ferries not often overcrowded?

Maybe the ferry collided with France's asbestos-filled Clemenceau warship that is being hauled to India for scrap, or the Greenpeace boats that are chasing it.

There is a tendency to cram as many passengers as possible onto the ferries – which is why I was thinking of the weather state. It doesn’t take much of a wave to capsize an overloaded ship.

This is certainly no occasion for cruelty. What a terrible disaster! If those pilgrims are from Southern ("Upper") Egypt, I would expect that most of them are probably "country" folk of limited means. Any decent person would feel for them and their families.

yes, thirteen hundred would be the actual safe operating capacity of the vessel as built. we know that in that part of the world, you can probably safely double the number of people on board, even maybe triple is a safe bet.

ADVICE TO ALL FREEPERS. NEVER BOARD AN OVERLOADED HAJJ FERRY FOR YOUR OWN GOOD.

Remember years ago a Saudi 747 carrying pilgrims crashed ..the cause was a passenger who lit a charcoal brazier inside the plane to cook his dinner...

You are right. No matter what one might think of muslims, egyptians or whatever, this is a tragedy and you should show compassion. And if that is above you then shut up.

i thought it was a dc 10 that crashed due to the bedouin cooking his own goat meat on the charcoal grill. btw, where would put a charcoal grill on an airplane, and wouldnt other passengers notice the grill and meat etc etc?
