Watch. Within 48 hours we're going to be hearing about the rumors spreading through Arab cities that a U.S. submarine torpedoed it.

I'd be surprised if we didn't hear about it by the end of today.

If there was no distress signal it sounds either like a methane bubble or a cargo shift causing a roll-over. Or maybe the ship split at a frame.

On the whole: I bet it turns out to be an overloading issue leading to a rollover - that's what sank the "Mary Rose" and the laws of physics haven't changed in the last 500 years.

Mamdouh Ismail, the company's owner, said the ship is more than 25 years old and registered in Panama. He refused to elaborate.

From that FOX story...

"...The ship is owned by the Egyptian firm El-Salaam Maritime Transport Co. and was carrying 1,300 passengers, the official added. Some of the passengers are believed to be pilgrims returning from the annual hajj to Mecca, which ended last month..."

1,300 passengers probably with a lot of luggage and other freight and a storm...there are only so few possibilities and with that full load and a storm combined with an older ship (of dubious maintenance history) and...sad.

Don't be ridiculous.

It won't take that long. Less than 24 hours:)

Its amazing how innaccurate the news agencies are.

THe last departure I can find from Jeddah on this ship is listed as 1/28 but the trip appears to only take 2 days.

It seems even the port authority information is innacurat
