Dozens of bodies pulled out of the water...at least twelve survivors have been rescued.

This catastrophe is getting very little coverage. Go figure?

See my post 129. It is just one ship. But the first ship I posted was Salaam 89 and the second ship I posted was Salaam 98. So the second one is not a modified version of the first.

Not to say the second one is not one funky looking ship, or has not been heavily modified from it's original configuration. Given the other photos floating around of another Salaam ferry being modified in China, it is clear that at least some of these ships are retrofitted freighters with massive superstructures welded on top.

I've been wondering about any radio transmission. I mean-- just "poof" and the thing goes down?????

Not unheard of, esp. if this type of ferry is prone to capsizing. Although the circumstances are somewhat different, just look at the Edmund Fitzgerald....a few theories about how it went down, but pretty much just that...theories. No one knows for sure since it was so sudden.

You've got me. In the event of electrical problem, you'd think the ship would be equipped with batter powered radios. And what about cell phones? Would those be out of range of any towers? How wide's the Red Sea? Where did the accident occur?

Camaratta was an excellent reporter. But she has not helped FNC--or her own career--as an anchorette. She needs to go back to the field.

No sadly it is not weird. Everyday on average a vessel of over 100 tons displacement disappears without a trace.

No video there yet. Not worth covering if you can't show what is happening.

Likely because it is a good distance offshore.

My apologies for my earlier post(pic of the skipper). At that time I wasn't aware of the loss of life.

When I first heard about this on the radio this a.m., as soon as I heard the location, I figured this was a boat loaded with (Western) tourists, but as info comes in regarding the passenger demographics, weather and seaworthiness of the ferry, I'm less inclined to think so. The sea is unforgiving and especially viscious to those who don't take her seriously (i.e. maintenance). Frankly, I'm surprised this sort of thing doesn't happen more often, especially in third world areas.

Oh man I cant wait for the Islamic conspiracy theories on this.
I can see it now.
8000 Jews were seen leaving the ship before it left.
