Rep. John A. Boehner voted last month against a bill "cracking down on illegal immigration"

I'm from Missouri (though not in Blunt's district), and while I think he's a pretty decent guy, the Abramoff issue is liable to be a distraction to him. Now that may not be fair to him, but I think the party needs someone there who can stay focused on being majority leader. As much as I like Tom DeLay, I think he's been less effective because he's had to mess with the whole Ronnie Earle crap.

I have to say, however, that I don't know much about Boehner. I was hoping Shadegg would win.

But in any case, I'm sure that Blunt will not let this interfere with his loyalty to the party. Afterall, his son Matt needs to be re-elected in 2008.

Is his name pronounced "Boner"? If so, I bet he had it hard as a kid in public schools...

Watch out for the payback for those who voted against him.

I believe it was a secret ballot.

Good. Blunt was an idiot who took months to get a $40 billion budget reduction done and couldn't even get ANWR or the Patriot Act passed. I would have preferred Shadegg, but Boehner is fine. He's got the spirt of 1994 in him so hopefully he'll be active in lobbying and pork reform, getting some better budget cutting and getting Bush's agenda passed. Blunt was a disaster. Thank God he's not going to be majority leader.

Boehner's 'no pork' pledge rankles:

Hurricane Katrina No Pork Pledge

Last Update: September 30, 2005

The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) unveiled its “Hurricane Katrina No Pork Pledge” at a press conference alongside members of Congress on September 8. With the rebuilding in the Gulf states expected to cost more in the first year than the past three years of the Iraq war combined, the potential for pork-barrel spending in the upcoming federal disaster relief measures is enormous. By signing the pledge, members of Congress vow to oppose any project or provision that is not directly related to the impact of Hurricane Katrina in any supplemental appropriations bill that provides funds for hurricane relief.

The following members of Congress have signed the “No Pork Pledge”:

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.)

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.)

Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio)

Rep. Steve Chabot (R-Ohio)

Rep. Chris Chocola (R-Ind.)

Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.)

Rep. Tom Feeney (R-Fla.)

Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.)

Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.)
Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas)

Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.)
Rep. Jefferson Miller (R-Fla.)
Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio)

Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.)

Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kans.)

Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.)

I suspect that Blunt was the pure political choice, while Shadegg was the pure conservative "idealist" choice. Boehner was probably the conservative "realist" choice...

He was instrumental in shoving through the Contract on America.
