I simply do not understand this seemingly earnest conviction on the part of every tin-pot tyrant drawing breath that the West in general and the U.S. in particular will not fight. Is it some sort of communicable disease?

I do have one suggested improvement over Afghanistan and Iraq - this time we won't need a trial.

Nukes have a bad reputation. I don't know why. They have only been used once in anger in the history of the planet, yet they proved extremely effective, and saved thousands of lives.

Perhaps the world would be a much safer place if people realized that nukes may actually be used in combat.

He thinks it is, because if he had them he'd have used them by now. And he thinks if he gets even 5 crude nukes, everybody will be so scared of him he can keep right on going until eventually the 15 minute doomsday is in his successors' hands, too. Then they will use it. That's the whole dastardly clever plan, such as it is. Its first premise is that any moralistic moron who can annihilate their enemies in 15 minutes but won't, will always cave. They read as weakness any form of self-restraint, because unrestrained and boundless cruelty is the only idea they have of strength.
