Prince Harry, the third in line to the British throne, is to be sent to Iraq next year as a troop commander and is likely to patrol the war-ravaged country's hazardous border with Iran.
According to defence sources, Harry will join the Army's 1st Mechanised Brigade, which will be deployed in Basra in May 2007.
Harry has told colleagues that he is determined to go on operations and be treated as normally as possible - not kept out of the line of fire.
Substantial planning will go into the deployment. As a troop commander in the Blues and Royals, the prince will have the rank of cornet, equivalent to a second lieutenant, in charge of 11 men and four light tanks.

Worthy of a heir to the throne.
I think he must be the best of the bunch.
God Bless him!
Wow. England may just end up with a worthwhile king.
bravo old chap.
He had a choice what unit he wanted to join, he chose one that he knew would be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.
You might be surprised. Go look up how his grandmother acquitted herself during WW2.
The House Of Windsor does occasionally turn out someone worthwhile, despite the horrific genetics. More than worthwhile - usually they turn out to be positively stellar.
I should qualify that - the rare worthwhile ones turn out to be stellar most of the time. The non-worthwhile ones, alas, seem to be the "normal" and most common type.
Ha...my son is heading to Basra this fall.....
All the royal men serve in the military don't they?
Interesting...Harry seems to have grown up. Just a few years back, he wore that Nazi armband to a party and drank his lips off in bars.
Good job, Harry...we were all young once.
I dunno, hes not the directly in line to take the throne. Prince Andrew is in a similar position and he served properly in the Navy.
No kidding. A member of the British royal family with cojones?
Most do, but I'm not sure if Prince Charles did. One of his brothers (Andrew I think? I can't keep them straight) was a helicopter pilot in the Falklands War.
Harry's brother William just entered the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.
Maybe Harry has the blood of a Lord Mountbatten in his veins? We'll see.

Except for Prince Edward. All he wanted to do was, SING! He resigned his commission after a bit.
Not all, but many/most.
The navy, generally, I think.
As Harry is not directly in line for the throne, at least as long as his brother is alive, it wouldn't be without precedent. Prince Andrew flew a decoy helicopter in the Falklands and was very much in harm's way.
There are still concerns that Prince Anderw was kept out of combat during the Falklands War. Hopefully, he won't be escorted around like Algore.
