In the court (and courts) of life and death, a little 11-year-old Massachusetts girl named Haleigh Poutre could be the next Terri Schiavo. For those who have not heard the tragic story, Haleigh was beaten nearly to death last September, allegedly by her adoptive mother and stepfather. The beating left her unconscious and barely clinging to life.
Within a week or so of the beating, her doctors had written her off. They apparently told Haleigh's court-appointed guardian, Harry Spence, that she was "virtually brain dead." Even though he had never visited her, Spence quickly went to court seeking permission to remove her respirator and feeding tube. The court agreed, a decision affirmed recently by the supreme court of Massachusetts.
And so, no doubt with the best of intentions, a little girl who had already suffered so much was stripped by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts of even the chance to fight to stay alive. If she didn't stop breathing when the respirator was removed, which doctors expected, she would slowly dehydrate to death.

The arrestee, Richard Alan Meywes, admitted sending the e-mail; said he did it to get publicity for the Schiavo case. From the quotes given, it was not a direct threat from him. That is, he didn't offer anyone money to kill Schiavo. (I don't see anything to suggest that he had any money either.) Rather, he worded it in passive voice, as if he were a reporter. The man had no criminal record.
There's not one word in any of them about the Meywes having any religious convictions of any kind. Religion simply does not figure in the story. The only mention I found was one story that called Judge Greer (!) a conservative Christian (!!). It also mentioned that Greer got kicked out of his southern Baptist church.
Not very exciting.
Involuntary organ donation again. Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth, and nobody would miss one abused child, right? Plus, they get a bureaucratic coup -- upgrading the charges against the stepfather to murder when the girl dies.
In God's court, it will be the DSS bureaucrats themselves on trial for murder.
Hahahaha, I'll bet Greer is pissed that he was only worth 50k! Okay, that's not funny, and the guy who made the threat was an idiot. Did they ascertain whether the nutball actually had that kind of money?

Were the adoptive parents drug users? I'll bet they were. Hope Mom isn't, because Haleigh needs a safe environment to recuperate in, after hospitalization. I hate liars....

Well, number one, I'm living in adultery although both of us are almost middle aged and divorced. Nobody will prosecute adultery in today's world. Number two, Jody probably has been hounding MS for that damn wedding.
Oh, and number three: MS broke so many rules regarding guardianship of Terri, nevermind all the other stuff, that if he can get away with that, what's the little issue of "adultery"? I was my mom's guardian, and I jumped through hoops.

Earlier stories had only bit of it, but even there, I puzzled whether this was a "threat" in the meaning of the law. It's fiction, there's not any money behind it, and the would be killer is not told how to collect. Who would commit a capital crime on such cheesy grounds? If I were the judge, I'd make Meywes pay costs, give him a lecture on civility, and send him home.
Again, no mention of religion, period. On the contrary, his lawyer implicitly denied that religion had any role in the case. Here:
"Meywes attorney said his client is cooperating fully with investigators and called the e-mail a 'lapse of judgement.'
"'[Meywes has] no criminal history, no history of violence, no history of mental illness, doesn't belong to any right wing or left wing groups that take a position about pro life or pro choice, none of that,' attorney Sean Devereux said."
Haleigh is showing signs of communicating.
Murphy and Avrett did not say how the girl signaled her answers, but they did say that it was not verbal.
DSS, Haleigh's guardian, has said little publicly about the girl's condition in recent weeks, except to say that the girl is apparently emerging from what was initially described by her physicians as a vegetative state with no hope for recovery.

BROCKTON -- Lawyers for the biological mother of an 11-year-old girl still struggling for life months after allegedly being severely beaten by her adoptive parents said yesterday they will ask a court for more input on the girl’s medical care.
Attorneys for the birth mother, Allison Avrett, said at a news conference that they planned to file a motion in Hampden Juvenile Court within "days" that also asks for access to Haleigh Poutre’s medical records.
