WASHINGTON - Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a fallen soldier in Iraq who reinvigorated the anti-war movement, was arrested and removed from the House gallery Tuesday night just before President Bush's State of the Union address, a police spokeswoman said.
Sheehan, who had been invited to attend the speech by Rep. Lynn Woolsey (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., was charged with demonstrating in the Capitol building, a misdemeanor, said Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider. Sheehan was taken in handcuffs to police headquarters a few blocks away and her case was processed as Bush spoke.
Schneider said Sheehan had worn a T-shirt with an anti-war slogan to the speech and covered it up until she took her seat. Police warned her that such displays were not allowed, but she did not respond, the spokeswoman said.
Police handcuffed Sheehan and removed her from the gallery before Bush arrived. Sheehan was to be released on her own recognizance, Schneider said.
"I'm proud that Cindy's my guest tonight," Woolsey said in an interview before the speech. "She has made a difference in the debate to bring our troops home from Iraq."
Woolsey offered Sheehan a ticket to the speech Gallery 5, seat 7, row A earlier Tuesday while Sheehan was attending an "alternative state of the union" press conference by CODEPINK, a group pushing for an end to the Iraq war.
Sheehan was arrested in September with about 300 other anti-war activists in front of the White House after a weekend of protests against the war in Iraq. In August, she spent 26 days camped near Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, where he was spending a working vacation.
Yes, I know. Unsubstantiated. This article has quote from Police.
If it's me, the thread will probably yanked, so if you're really dying to know, I'd wait up.
Ok, have a good night. :-)
It's been a very interesting day.
Yeah, many conflicting reports. Pacifica radio said she was waving a flag. Someone else said she waved her t-shirt like a flag. Guess we should wait till tomorrow for the real story.
LOL!
Don't go getting all paranoid now. I'm sure it was all a misunderstanding. ;)
It's official, they arrested her over the t-shirt. She never got a chance to use the banner.
"I've read that rumor in other threads but so far this is the only article with a quote from the Capitol Police."
Its being echoed around both left & right sides of the blogosphere [Kos, Powerline, etc]. But you are correct, I can't find "evidence" of the banner yet.
Frankly, it would bother me even more that she would be able to smuggle in a banner. One would think the Capitol Police would recognize a know activist like her.
Me too. The soul of the rat party.
Reuters & CNN have it:
"CNN said Sheehan was arrested after unveiling a banner and was being held on Capitol Hill for about an hour, which would keep her away from the address, which was set to start at 9 p.m. EST."

He was directing her to the "idiots that wear hooded sweatshirts to the SOTU" section.
"While I am not upset that Cindy got arrested, but for wearing a shirt?"
Actually, she was arrested by the fashion police for wearing what appears to be a black, velour jogging suit.
I think we could replace "activist" with "willing communist tool" or perhaps "nitwit."
Wow! How did she get her face whiter than her teeth???
Might have. If Shithead hadn't given a statement to the press only hours before that she would NOT protest at the speech, out of respect to the congress creature who had invited her. So Sindy just flat out lied, and couldn't even manage the several days that Senator "Lurch" Kerry maintained as a flip-flop minimum.
Actually, that was a typo, I meant to say I DON'T want to see her in Congress. The only possible reason to have her there, is to make Democrats/Whatever platform she runs on look bad.
I though she was still down in Venezuela hugging Chavez ( or was she in Cuba, hugging Castro? or in Iraq hugging Saddam?)
If she goes to trial, AP will be calling her a "dissident."
