FReeper Canteen ~ Canteen Kids: Who's Your Favorite Engine? ~ Feb. 1, 2006
Loves The Troops! | Shorty Gigglelips

Posted on 01/31/2006 6:06:46 PM PST by StarCMC

Hi!  My name is Shorty and I am 4 years old!
First I want to say thanks for trying to keep us safe to all the soldiers out there!

Today I want to talk about my favorite TV show,

Thomas the Tank Engine

The show is all about Thomas and his friends.
Some of their names are Gordon and Percy.

My favorite engine is Emily, because when I play with my Emily in the living room, her wheels go deep in the carpet and I can pretend it's snowing.  Here's a picture of Emily:

Emily is green and she doesn't have a number.  Instead she just has some squares.

Another engine is James.

He's my second favorite engine because he's red and red is a pretty color.  James is number 5.

There's a new engine called Molly.

I don't know much about her yet except that she's yellow.

Here are some fun things you can do online with Thomas:

Play games and more at Thomas' site!

 Some printable activity sheets here!

Lost of stuff to know about Thomas here!

I hope you like my thread.  I had fun telling you about my favorite TV show.

Who is YOUR favorite engine?

Frozen out of the Big Game- Seattle Post-Intelligencer- February 1, 2006
Antarctic-bound crew has no working TV

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/football/257765_polarhawks01.html

With looming icebergs as the stadium and noisy penguins the crowd, the Seattle-based Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star is bringing the Seahawks' 12th man and football's southernmost fans to the world's most remote nosebleed section.
Early this week the Polar Star was about 8,200 nautical miles from Seattle, in the South Pacific tropics, having crossed the equator and international date line while preparing for its own spirited battle to reach Antarctica. "By Super Bowl Sunday, we anticipate being somewhere in the high seas getting the snot kicked out of us ... just like Pittsburgh!" Ensign Harold Kiffer, the ship's spokesman, wrote in an e-mail to the Seattle P-I.
Alas, the men and women of the Polar Star will endure the rough seas without a glimpse of the Seahawks. The icebreaker's television isn't working.
The ship's satellite television system has been inoperative since the cutter left Seattle -- even though a part to fix the problem was dropped from a Coast Guard C-130 plane on a training mission.
"Follow the Seahawks? With what -- two tin cans and a long string?" Chief Warrant Officer Ken Stuber of Astoria, Ore., wrote in an e-mail.
The 130 men and women of the Polar Star were scrambled last month to steam for the bottom of the world -- yanked away just two days before their neighbors, the hometown Seahawks, earned a historic first Super Bowl berth by beating Carolina.
(Radio operators managed to follow the Carolina game by picking up Bay Area stations. Everyone else got periodic updates through the ship's public-address system.)
The icebreaker, on 48-hour alert to sail, was called into Operation Deep Freeze 2006 when the Krasin, a Russian icebreaker hired by the U.S. National Science Foundation, experienced mechanical problems.
The Polar Star will back up the Russian ship as the austral summer grows shorter and, with it, the window to supply scientists by battering a channel to McMurdo Station through 84 nautical miles of ice.

So on Sunday, instead of seeing the Rolling Stones at halftime, the crew more likely will hear about IceCube -- not the singer but a telescope beneath the South Pole ice that's measuring galactic neutrinos shooting through the Earth.
"That's the worst thing about being on a mission to Antarctica during the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl run ... not being able to be in Seattle if -- and it's a big if -- they win the big game," said Senior Chief Petty Officer James Kephart, a Denver native.
"On the other hand, if they lose, it might be a good thing to be on the bottom of the Earth. At any rate, Goooooooooooo Seahawks!"
Petty Officer Jordan Suminski of Mukilteo, a lifelong fan, puts the best face on the situation.
"One of my dreams is to watch the Hawks in the Super Bowl, the other is to see the last untouched continent of Antarctica, so I will gladly change one dream for another," he said.
America's three huge polar icebreakers, which are the Coast Guard's largest cutters and national security assets, are based on Seattle's waterfront at Pier 36 -- neighbors to the Seahawks' Qwest Field.
The icebreakers are nicknamed "seagoing footballs" because of their keel-less hulls. Like Seahawk and Steeler running backs Shaun Alexander and Jerome Bettis, they use brute strength while seeking the path of least resistance to reach their goal, says Terry Julich, a Coastie veteran of Antarctica.
The Polar Star can crush 6-foot-thick ice continuously and ice up to 21 feet by backing and ramming.
While the crew hails from Alaska to Puerto Rico and Maine to Hawaii, Kiffer figures two-thirds are Seahawk believers, including Lt. Cmdr. Jason Hamilton of Boise, Idaho, a season-ticket holder.
"Polar Star is going deep down south, just as the Seahawks are going to take Pittsburgh deep all game long," Kiffer wrote in an e-mail.
The football team is on the minds of many.
"I saw a (real) seahawk today, and we named him Shaun," Petty Officer 2nd Class Pamela-Renae Rollins, of Denver, wrote in an e-mail.
Then there is Seaman Michael Walker, who is from Philadelphia. "I will be rooting for the Steelers on this one. Since the Eagles are out, I have to root for the other Pennsylvania team."
Coast Guard veterans to the lost continent, Julich and Gary Boyer, say that in past missions during Super Bowl week -- which never had the Seahawk factor -- Coasties used Armed Forces Network radio, teletype, satellite communications and word from shore to follow the game.
At one time, according to Lt. Cmdr. M. Andre Billeaudeaux, Coast Guard District 13 spokesman, the ship sometimes launched a helicopter to collect a video of the game from the Antarctic science station. Commanding officers enforced a "no talking about the game" rule with radiomen so the crew could watch the taped version as though it was in real time.
Kiffer says there's a sliver of hope the satellite television system will be revived. At the least, the ship's satellite Internet connection ought to update the crew with highlights and score. "But we're realistic and understand that there are other priorities in keeping a 30-year-old ship operating," Kiffer said.
Super Bowl thoughts from the high seas- Seattle Post-Intelligencer-
February 1, 2006
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/football/257677_polaremails01ww.html
The Antarctica-bound crew of the Seattle-based Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star weighs in from the high seas about Super Bowl week:
"I saw a seahawk today, and we named him Shaun."
Petty Officer Second Class Pamela-Renae Rollins, Denver, Colo.
"That's the worst thing about being on a mission to Antarctica during the Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl run... not being able to be in Seattle if, and it's a big if, they win the big game. On the other hand, if they lose, it might be a good thing to be on the bottom of the earth. At any rate, Goooooooooooo Seahawks!"
Senior Chief Petty Officer James Kephart, Denver, Colo.
"Seattle is the first and only city I have lived in with an NFL team, so its pretty cool that the home team is going. Go Hawks!"
Petty Officer First Class Todd Bancroft, Plattsburgh, N.Y.
"Polar Star is going deep down south, just as the Seahawks are going to take Pittsburgh deep all game long."
Lt. Cmdr. Jason Hamilton, Boise, Idaho
"Go Seahawks! After the Razorbacks' miserable season, I need someone to root for."
Chief Petty Officer Travis Parks, El Dorado, Ark.
"I will be rooting for the Steelers on this one. Since the Eagles are out, I have to root for the other Pennsylvania team."
Seaman Michael Walker, Philadelphia
"Does it count if I'm a die hard Viking fan, but rooting for the Steelers?"
Petty Officer Second Class Pete Hendrickson, Moorhead, Minn.
"Though not a true Pittsburgh fan (Patriots all the way!), I am still an AFC fan. NFC has got to realize who is boss and by goodness that is going to be Pittsburgh!"
Chief Warrant Officer Adrian Pope, Falmouth, Mass.

"Yes it's true, I am a Dolphins fan that is cheering for the Hawks. Even have the shirt to prove it. So I am there for the support of our homeport Seattle and the home team the Seahawks. Real disappointed we will miss all the hype and festivities that will take place when the HAWKS win the big gameEven more disappointed we won't be able to watch it."
Chief Warrant Officer Lee Loftis, New Plymouth, Idaho
"I'm rooting for the Hawks. I think it's fantastic they finally made to the Super Bowl and am disappointed I wont be in Seattle for it."
Petty Officer First Class Trace Moorhead, Springfield, Ore.
"I've always rooted for whoever played the Steelers. I was happy to see the Seahawks move to the NFC West so now I can now fully support their NFC quest and the CHAMPIONSHIP, having made Seattle my permanent home for the past 11 years."
Chief Petty Officer Paul Magallanes, Seattle
"Pats fan for life, but will cheer on any team that will increase Bill Cowher's frown. Go Seahawks!"
Senior Chief Petty Officer Edward Glasson, Cape Cod, Mass.
"I am a Broncos fan that hates the Steelers for what they did to my team. GO SEAHAWKS!"
Seaman Charlie Schmalz, Grand Junction, Colo.
"I've been a die-hard Seahawks fan for over 30 years. We have the best offense in the league, and our defense is getting better every game. How can they lose? It will take a lot of turnovers by the Seahawks to give Pittsburgh a close game. Otherwise the Seahawks will fly away with this game."
Petty Officer First Class Phil Ngo, Tacoma
"Since Alexander played for Alabama, I've been a big Seahawks fan. Us Alabama boys keep track of our good football players and Shaun has definitely been watched carefully. Roll Tide. Shaun Roll!!!"
Petty Officer First Class Andrew Moon, Gadsden, Ala.
"I am disappointed that we are not going to be able to watch the Super Bowl. I have been a Seattle fan all my life. I've cheered for my Supersonics, the Mariners, and the Seahawks. I have seen all my teams rise to a higher level of play only to watch it all come crashing down during the playoffs. And the Seahawks, well the last time I saw greatness from them was when I was 5 years old and playing with my Matchbox cars in the old living room. But now they have made it to show, the Super Bowl, and I am on my way to Antarctica. Even though I won't be able to watch the game I will still be cheering them on from where ever I will be. Even though one of my dreams is to watch the Hawks in the Super Bowl, the other is see the last untouched continent of Antarctica, so I will gladly change one dream for another as I serve the Coast Guard and my country on the greatest icebreaker of them all- Polar Star."
Petty Officer Third Class Jordan Suminski, Mukilteo
"I'm a Patriots fan above all else, but having lived in Seattle for the past eight years I've grown to love the Seahawks as well. I'm a little bummed we're missing all the excitement in Seattle, it would have been great to see the city celebrate a Super Bowl Win. And even though we went to rival High Schools, (him - Boston College High School (91), me - Malden Catholic High School (94)), I'm pulling for Matt Hasselbeck to win his first Super Bowl MVP!"
Petty Officer First Class Steve Dickie, Stoneham, Mass.
"I commute on the Sounder and ride with a bunch season-ticket holders. I told them early on that if we got deployed and missed the playoffs, it was guaranteed that the Seahawks would win the Super Bowl. Needless to say, they were happy to hear we were leaving."
Ens. Harold Kiffer, Ketchikan, Alaska
