Saint Louis -- Black activists on Tuesday called for the firing of police officers who were shown on live television swinging night sticks and punching and kicking a suspect after a car chase.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol was investigating to see if the four officers involved had acted illegally.
The suspect, Edmon Burns, 33, of St. Louis County, was treated at a hospital and released, and was jailed. No charges had been filed. His attorney did not return calls Tuesday.
Burns and one of the four officers, from St. Louis, are black, The three other officers, from suburban Maplewood, are white.
The chase began Monday in Maplewood, where officers said they noticed a man in a van acting suspiciously. It ended in St. Louis.
Much of the chase was shown on live television shot from a KTVI-TV helicopter, along with the officers apparently beating the man for several seconds. What could not be clearly seen on the video was how much the suspect was resisting.

He probably wouldnt have got his ass kicked if he had just pulled over to begin with.
I saw a clip of this and the police did use a nightstick and another kicked him. It was hard to see if he was resisting. However, the black activists failed to mention anything about him endangering innocent people by running from the police in a vehicle. It must have slipped their minds.
What the #$%^ does "in a van acting suspiciously" mean? Was he just sitting there? Was he snorting some coke off the steering wheel? Parked outside a high school with some candy? What?
I saw this live on Fox and was wondering when the bleating would commence.
If this is the clip I saw, the cop who ran up and started kicking him was clearly acting unhinged. There is the faint possibility the suspect had something in his hand, but it seems unlikely.
I know that the adrenaline gets pumping, but this is unsportsmanlike activity. The irony is, they call this, "Subduing the prisoner." -- Yeah, with a boot.
Man, they treat alligators with more care.
Punishment is, in our nation, a matter for judge and jury, outside the heat of the moment and in public view.
That said, it's awfully hard not to be aggressive with the guy after he has endangered many lives and the LEOs are wound up on adrenaline. Good job catching him. :-)
Well, you were there. What do you think happened?
Who obtained permission to video-tape the officers? Was there a check and balance in place or was a rogue responsible for the taping? Because you know, the taping, if illegal, is more important than anything wrong the officers in question may have done.
But an alligator carcass may be of some use.
In a recent case here in Houston, a mentally ill man died when he was tasered several times when the jailers were trying to get him to the mental health facility. Our local Jesse Jackson wanna-be didn't just ask that the jailers be fired; he said they were murderers, that they had intentionally killed the man. The man, Quannel X never missed a chance to divide this city on race.
What gave you the impression that I was there, or that I claimed to have been there?
I have been a LEO though.
One in 200 suspects runs from the cops. The ones that run are guilty as hell, and often will sacrifice their lives rather than be caught. If they sacrifice a few innocent lives while running, well, they could care less.
Those that get beaten deserve to get beaten. They are endangering the lives of the officers and countless innocent people when they run from the cops in a vehicle at 130 MPH.
Only until the gators jump into cars and run away from the police.
What could not be clearly seen on the video was how much the suspect was resisting......

----If they were engaged in a chase, then he WAS resisting arrest.
