One of the most difficult and important things a LEO needs to learn is that it is not his job to punish suspects, but to investigate and arrest them.

Punishment is, in our nation, a matter for judge and jury, outside the heat of the moment and in public view.

That said, it's awfully hard not to be aggressive with the guy after he has endangered many lives and the LEOs are wound up on adrenaline. Good job catching him. :-)
