WASHINGTON - Samuel Anthony Alito Jr. was sworn in as the nation's 110th Supreme Court justice on Tuesday after being confirmed by the Senate in one of the most partisan victories in modern history.
Alito was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court building across from the Capitol at about 12:40 p.m., EDT, court officials said.
Alito and his wife, Martha-Ann Bomgardner, along with other members of the court and their spouses, attended the ceremony in the justices' conference room. The 55-year-old New Jersey jurist took both the constitutional and judicial oaths so he can immediately participate in court decisions.
"Notice how he describes it as a "partisan victory", as if the partisanship was somehow only characteristic of the Republicans? Or am I reading too much into that?"
My guess is partisan in that the final vote broke mostly on party lines which is a real shame considering the caliber of judge Alito is. More than 4 dems should have voted for him.
I don't think so Mara. The state doesn't matter, it's the state dinners that gets them.
And? It still took one day short of seven months before she would be replaced.
Machine Gun Sammy!
The legal analyst (the woman) on Fox News, said this morning after the confirmation that she has heard that Justise John Paul Stephens has told some that he was appointed by a Republican president (Ford) and he would like to be replaced by a Republican president. I almost fainted.
Actually, I was j/k. I admire Ms. O'Connor. She has done a lot to further to cause of women.
Gotta love AP. Republican victory = "partisan", with no comment at all on who made it that way...the Democrats.
I'm sure she is a sweet lady, but she was a horrible justice during the latter part of her tenure. It got to be that the law was whatever Sandra Day O'Connor said it was.
Well, since the original reference was to "this" nomination, I took it to mean Alito. I think this one actually went through pretty well, considering how contentious it was. And that's all I'll say about that. :)
Sounds too good to be true.
Yes, but if he nominates Janice Rogers Brown, how are the liberals going to trash her? Though, I guess if they trashed Thomas, they can trash anyway. They have no shame.
Note to Alito: non dimenticare mai
Leftists reserve their most hateful vitriol for blacks who've strayed off the plantation, so they'd have no problem attempting to trash JRB.
I don't believe you can figure in the death of Chief Justice Renquist dying while serving.
I didn't, even figuring in that it's spelled "Rehnquist".
Sorry for misspelling. My original post of the timeframe stands for itself.
That's not entirely the Dems' fault. Rehnquist died, so Justice Roberts' nomination was moved to the chief justice position. Then the White House came out with the extremely bad Miers nomination, so it took almost 4 months before Alito was even nominated for her seat.
if this was a demorat nomination the 58-42 vote would be hailed as a non-partisan vote by the moderate republicans
