Crossville, Cumberland County (WVLT) – Police in Crossville are in a standoff with an escaped prison inmate from Louisiana in the Woodmere Mall in Crossville.

According to police, a second escaped inmate, Joseph Oakes, 27, from Meridian Mississippi, was captured at the mall earlier this morning.

Authorities tell Volunteer TV News the man still inside the mall is 18-year-old Terrance Williams of New Orleans.

Recent police scanner traffic indicates possible shots fired inside the mall.

Williams is serving time for second degree murder, while Oakes is convicted of armed robbery.

Police believe the two are a part of a group of seven inmates that escaped from a prison in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, Monday. The group escaped by climbing onto the jail’s roof and out the back gate of the prison. One of the seven was captured Monday in Louisiana, the location of the other four is unknown at this time.

According to the Associated Press, the group had been moved from Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, following Hurricane Katrina.

WVLT Volunteer TV News has a team headed to the scene and will have the latest information coming up on East Tennessee This Morning.

BASTROP, La. -- Seven inmates who were moved from Jefferson Parish after Hurricane Katrina to the Morehouse Parish jail escaped early Monday but one was back in custody, authorities said.

Michael Robinson, 19, of Metairie, was arrested in Gretna, said Deputy Chief Mike Tubbs. He did not provide details about the arrest.

Tubbs said officials believe the other suspects also are in the New Orleans area. On the loose are Keith Wilson, 25, of Kenner; Reginald Bradley, 18, of Harvey; Joshua O'Neal, 18, of New Orleans; Terrance Williams, 18, of New Orleans; Joseph Oakes, 27, of Meridian, Miss.; and Ryan M. Powe, 18, of Alpharetta, Ga.

The men apparently left a dorm room, climbed up to the jail's roof and crossed a fence to leave the prison's property, Tubbs said. One or more accomplices also were likely involved in the escape, he said.

"Correspondents have revealed that the suspects may have had assistance from some people in the New Orleans area," Tubbs said.

A stolen church van was found later Monday at the State Tax Commission building in Jackson, Miss., according to the Hinds County Sheriff's Department. A short while after that discovery, sheriff's deputies said a 2000 silver Dodge Intrepid, license plate number 488HHP was reported stolen.

In addition to other charges, Powe was serving time on a second-degree murder charge, while Wilson and Williams were convicted of attempted second-degree murder. Bradley and Oakes were serving time for armed robbery and other violations, while O'Neal was in jail on a probation violation and drug charges.

Each of the inmates will face simple escape charges once back in custody, Tubbs said.

I'm certainly no expert on jail breaks--but from the way the story is written, this seemed to a pretty easy thing for these guys to do. Just go up on the roof and jump over the fence..........

Fugitives in custody after shooting, standoff
By Associated Press
January 31, 2006

Two fugitives from a Louisiana jail were in custody early Tuesday after one of them was shot during a standoff of several hours at a shopping center.
Mike Tubbs, chief deputy for the Morehouse Parish, La., sheriff’s department, confirmed that Terrance Williams and Joseph Oakes had been captured in Tennessee about 100 miles east of Nashville. They were among seven inmates who broke out of the parish jail in Bastrop Monday. Four remain at large.

The incident began with a police chase at about midnight Monday when the inmates wouldn’t stop their car for Cumberland County deputies, according Crossville Police Chief David Beaty.

City police joined the chase and the inmates wrecked. Oakes got out of the vehicle with a gun but was quickly arrested, Beaty said.

Williams also was armed and used his gun to shoot his way into a closed store at the shopping center. He held off authorities for more than five hours from inside the building, at one point using a crawlspace to move from store to another.

Officers used tear gas and a SWAT team to flush Williams out the back of the building at about 6 a.m.

"One of the officers gave him commands to halt and to get his hands up. At that time, the officer fired one round from a shotgun and hit the individual in the upper leg area," Beaty said.

He said the wound wasn’t life-threatening.

Williams, 18, of New Orleans had been convicted of attempted second-degree murder.

Oakes 27, of Meridian, Miss., was serving time for armed robbery and other violations.

A little to easy for my taste...Lets not forget this was all GWB's fault..LOL!

Instead of putting more money into Lousiana we should sell Louisiana back to the French for a few dollars and let them deal with the crime of the welfare state..
