Chafee will vote against Alito

PROVIDENCE -- U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee announced this morning that he will vote against the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court.

In a statement issued at a press conference this morning, the Rhode Island Republican said he was "greatly concerned" about some of Alito's philosophies.

Chafee described himself as a "pro-choice, pro-Bill of Rights" Republican, in explaining his decision against Alito.

It would have been smarter simply to announce he opposes any filibuster of Alito.

Will he vote for cloture?

Is this the cloest thing to a Republican that can get elected to the senate from Rhodey? If so, just pitiful.

Just goes to show that the idea that we have a conservative Republican Senate is really a misconception.

In terms of spending, social conservatism, fiscal responsibility, etc. what we really have is a Senate controlled by moderates with several liberal Republicans to boot.

With Snowe, Chafee, Specter, Voinovich and sometimes McCain in there, we are really close to a 50/50 tie with the Dems IN PRACTICE.

Fuggedabout discerning a man's 15 year track record of judging according to established law .... Give us judges who emotionally and personally support abortion at any time for any reason/sarc

PSST: What's the "Bill of Rights" got to do with this? And doesn't Roe vs Wade kind of obliterate Artcle X?

I can't wait for all those 'bots to tell me again how it's better to have a liberal republican, than no republican at all.

Good luck!

No surprise at all.

The Republicans need to run a conservative challenger against him in the next primary. If the worst happens and the Democrats pick up the seat, will it really be any worse? And we need to give the voters a real choice. We usually do well when we do.

Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but he would if he could.

(The only vote the republicans can count on from Chaffee is the one that organizes the Senate.)

He's the most likely candidate to pull a jumpin' Jeffords. I used to think that at least he's a "R". Now I just don't see his use. Actually he hurts the GOP more than any Democrat could as the media can now say that "Democrats AND Republicans have concerns about Alito". Republicans should dump Chaffee in the primary without any guilt or remorse. Anybody who votes against someone as qualified as Alito is a partisan hack. Chaffee is basically saying that he's a Democrat.

We have a Republican majority, but not a conservative majority, I agree.

Defeating Lincoln D. Chafee in the next Republican primary should be a top priority for every Freeper.

OK, it is time for the RNC to dump him in favor of his Republican challenger. If we lose this seat in Rhode Island than let it be, better than have Chafee. Enough is enough.

The one good thing is he will not vote to filibuster.

As long as we have a comfortable margin, let these RINOs vote the way the think they need to.

I would rather have a RINO lib republican that will vote for cloture, if not the nominee, than an obstructing dem.

Rhode Island is very close to Massachusetts and you see what crawled upon the shore of the Senate from that state. (allusion to chappaquidick or swift boats is purely coincidental).

Is the mayor running against the senator? In an upcoming primary? Pardon my ignorance of RI politics. Thanks.

Perhaps he had to wait for Kerry's call to make up his mind.
