Good Monday morning, fellow Freeper political junkies. One of the more ridiculous episodes of political theater is about to play itself out on the Senate floor, as the John Kerry-led democrats mount an exercise in political futility which will further expose their total irrelevance..So join us today, or drop in on occasion, for the festivities...

"I've seen some calls from DU and DC for the Dems to boycott the vote tomorrow--are they allowed to do that? Can the Senators just not show up for the vote, once cloture passes in an hour or so?"

LOL. Not and be within the rules of the Senate. They are obliged to VOTE. They have to give a reason, and "be excused" for being unable to.

Immediately followed by Justice O'Connor handing in her robes.

Followed by her getting in a Corvette and breaking several traffic ordinances getting out of DC.

That sums it up. Cloture vote at 4:30 est today. Confirmation vote 11:00 am est tomorrow.

If all goes according to plan, Alito will be sworn in at Noon tomorrow, and have a front row seat at the SOTU tomorrow night.

Speaking of Motown...

The best thing about having the Super Bowl in Detroit is the winning team's fans can torch the town and nobody will notice.

do you have any examples of the last time, and/or the most important votes, "pairing" was used...

No, I don't know when it last happened, but my guess is that it is only employed in "routine" matters -- appropriation for a new dam, for instance.

As Cyber Liberty points out, Senatorial courtesy is at a low ebb. Unlikely that vote pairing would take place on a vote of major importance such as the Alito approval vote, since the "friendly no" would have to explain to his/her lefty constituency why he/she aided in the appointment.

All moot, anyway, as it appears Senator Ensign will be back to vote on the appointment.
