8 a.m. would have gotten him on a 9 o'clock flight to DC and he would have arrived by 2 p.m. and 1/2 from airport to the Capital would have put him there in plenty of time to vote. This isn't comforting.

Probably only 54 get to vote on cloture, after Sen. Ensign's car accident. Still, if the 7 Ds of the Gang of Fourteen hold together and vote for cloture we have at least one more than the 60 votes required to squelch the filibuster.
