The pilot ejected safely and was recovered. There were no injuries.
Great!
Airplanes can be replaced. Boeing will be more than happy to build a replacement.

What is the shrinkage involved with an ejection? 1/2-1 inch?

I don't know anything about this yet, but I'm sure my Brother, who does the maintenance records for this Wing (but possibly not this squadron) will be busy as hell over the next few days. The investigators are probably already on board, and will be scrutinizing records. I only hope it wasn't a maintenance issue. There are reams of records on each aircraft that are meticulously kept. One mistake is all that is needed.
I hate to say it, but I hope the pilot just got the jitters trying to land in the dark at 4:00am.

at approximately 4:17 a.m.
This was obviously a night landing! I have heard Navy pilots say the scariest thing in the world is a carrier landing at night....
Studies have also shown that a pilot's heart rate is actually higher during a night-time carrier landing than it is in actual combat.

The pilot, a lieutenant, crashed a F/A-18C hornet at approximately 11:16 P.M. Brisbane time. The aircraft side number was 404. He is still under review depending on the crash resulted in a mechanical error or operator error. The pilot claims he "lost power" as he approached the fan tail. The jet was not recovered, although many parts and debris were retained that remained on the flight deck. Flight ops were cancelled for three days to ensure all FOD was accounted for. The family was notified and he remained on the carrier throughout the evolution. - VFA-25 someone
