Hiya, FReepers! A visit from the newish comic strip Winger.

Pookie18 has been posting a lot of my stuff in other posts, so I hope nobody minds my posting a new comic here, myself. I want to thank everybody for all the nice comments in the other threads!

I have to ask Pookie to slow down on posting my comics, though. I do need the exposure, but posting *everything* I've got here sort of puts me out of business. The only only only revenue I make on my comics is from ads and donations on the website, and posting my entire archive here denies me both. I've got to worry about my host network, too, which is going to soon notice the drain from the servers.

But would it be OK to post an occasional comic strip with a link, like this thread (as opposed to posting an entire week's worth of comics at once)? Especially when it's relevant to some current event? I'm sure the other cartoonists would appreciate it, too.

But, I thought that cartoons/comics were supposed to be funny.

That's a reasonable request and explanation. I am sure that Pookie18 has always posted the strips as a matter of support, and not to undermine your efforts for revenue. I liked the one you posted in this thread.

Being an amateur cartoonist myself I get the dicotomy you face between extra pub vs. sapping of ad revenue, but complaining about Pookie18 posting your stuff while you're posting your stuff sounds a lot like hypocrasy.

She's only seventeen. Daddy says she's too young, but she's old enough for... oh, this must be a different Winger.

No, no... I'm not complaining at all! I'm trying to be ultra-careful to avoid that, as a matter of fact.

What I'm trying to do is suggest a different way of doing it, regardless of who does it. See, at some point the syndicates and my network are going to notice the bandwidth drain and issue cease-and-desist letters. Even the indie cartoonists may be paying for their own bandwidth, and this creates a similar dilemma for them. I'm trying to find a nice, friendly way of pointing all of this to a different outcome.

Posting a comic every once in a while is fair use, but posting entire archives is a problem. But this isn't a complaint, I'm trying to be informational.

Why is it hypocrisy? If I own something and want to give it away for free, it should be me that's deciding the when and how much. If I wrote a book and decided to donate 100 copies to libraries, it doesn't mean that everyone else is suddenly free to make copies and give it away.

I've already got your site bookmarked. Plus, I'm spreading your URL throughout the WWW.

Great Comic!

I'll be caught up by the end of the week. As I told you, I'll be including a message for FReepers to click on the posted toon to visit & support the strip & site. You can check it out tomorrow.

Yeah, I guess you're right, but have you asked Pookie18 to not post so much in a private message? The combo of the post and the message came across to me as a little sour.

Personally, I don't have enough done or enough time to get my own site started up, I majored in Art then got turned off towards it by an instructor at Penn State. As a result I'm out of practice in my illustrating skills and not very adept in computer graphics programs, but I'm working on it. Any pub free or not is welcome to me.

Nice work by the way, I'll have to visit your site: )

Heh, well, I did reply to Pookie at the end of the previous threads... which was practically private by that time. ;)

My concern was that in our last exchange, Pookie, you said that you were going to be "posting a week's worth on Monday"... that means that you would be pretty close to having my complete archives, here.

And I'm not just looking out for myself... buried at the end of that last thread, I was saying that the syndicated cartoonists need links back, too. Syndicates may be picking up a few more conservative comic strips, but they may not be actively promoting them. And I know from hearing directly from some syndicated cartoonists that if a comic strip isn't sold to enough newspapers by a syndicate, not marketed aggressively, then that "syndicated" cartoonist could actually be doing that comic for free, hoping for something to happen later, working other jobs to make up the difference.

So even those who might not like my stuff in particular, be sure that if you link stuff by other cartoonists, include a link and maybe even a button! We all make cute buttons! :)

All I can say is that in my Today's Toons threads here on Free Republic, I posted ~ 13,000 toons last year (& will again this year). Yours is the only one that I'm using a click-on link to your site & asking for support. I don't plan on doing it for others unless per request (as you did). I've never used quotas on cartoons before & have posted multiple older cartoons once I've learned of a site...if I feel that viewers of the thread would enjoy it. Your Winger cartoons (as opposed to your others which are not political enough for my threads) are only about 7 weeks old so I decided to post them a week at a time since a week of your cartoons seems to follow a specific storyline. If after this week, you don't think that my 2000+ daily views on Free Republic (in addition to Today's Toons appearance on at least 2 other web sites as well as in some Yahoo! groups & in Usenet newsgroups, etc.) is doing you any good, let me know & I'll stop posting them.

It may be since my comic strip is so new, the imbalance is more dramatic in my logs than for other, more established sites. That is, views of my comics over here are completely overwhelming what little traffic I've got going on over there. ;)

Some other sites may simply have not noticed. Nobody has time to follow back every referrer in their logs to see what's going on. If you've been doing this for a while, you've been lucky; syndicates and networks *do* send out these lawyerly letters when alerted to other sites linking their graphics. That's probably not the best way for it to be handled, but it does happen.

But thanks, again. As I said, I *do* need the exposure, at the same time. I can see how it might have looked like I was complaining in the first post, but I felt I had to mention the other posts, anyway, so this wouldn't look so much like spam. That's the Catch-22... you'd like to share, but one man's sharing is another man's spam. :)
