WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush says Bill Clinton has become so close to his father that the Democratic former president is like a member of the family. Former President George Bush has worked with Clinton to raise money for victims of the Asian tsunami and the hurricane disaster along the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Asked about his father and Clinton, Bush quipped, "Yes, he and my new brother."
"That's a good relationship. It's a fun relationship to watch," Bush said in an interview with CBS News broadcast on Sunday.
While attending Pope John Paul's funeral, Bush said, "It was fun to see the interplay between dad and Clinton. One of these days, I'll be a member of the ex-president's club. ... I'll be looking for something to do."
He said ex-presidents share rare experiences that others cannot understand. "And so I can understand why ex-presidents are able to put aside old differences," he said.
Bush said he checked in with Clinton occasionally.
"And you know, he says things that makes it obvious -- that makes it obvious to me that we're kind of, you know, on the same wavelength about the job of the presidency. Makes sense, after all, there's this kind of commonality," he said.
Bush jokingly referred to speculation that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former president's wife, will seek the Democratic nomination for the presidency. He had earlier referred to the former first lady as "formidable."
"Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton," he said, referring to how Bill Clinton had followed his father, and Hillary Clinton could follow him.
Leg pulling often gets unnoticed unless one pulls the hip out of joint.
Hmm, interesting because I didn't get that from what Bush said, not at all, as to those "two families" "consolidating power."
I agree with other commenters here and that is that what W said was along the lines of the Texan dry sense of humor, and, that he was just being gracious. Not to underestimate his sense of politics, either. But, the rest of what you write, the cult thing, FR, "laughing stock" and all that...it's unsupportable intrigue.
Just so you'll know, Itzlzha thinks Bush is the anti-Christ.
Of, by and always for Clinton.
Maybe it's a new fad... makiing nice with an accused rapist who jerks in a sink.
People are always looking for a politican who will do what they define as the conservative thing.
That only happens when a solid majority of voters agree with conservatives. Anyone who can count... I know that leaves some people out, can see that our last two elections were very close. Fools on the left think that if they just offer the voters a true leftist who makes no bones about his leftism, the left will win. Fools on the right think that if they just offer the voter a true right winger who makes no bones about his conservatism the right will win.
Presidents Goldwater and McGovern proved the falacy of that position.
A majority of voters are not conservative and a majority of the votes are not liberal. But both the left and the right must have flunked math. They think that 35 percent of the voters can cast 51 percent of the votes. That has never happened and never will. The 30 percent inthe middle will not allow it.
The Democrats learned nothing from either LBJ or McGovern. LBJ proved that if the Republicans ran a true conservative and a true liberal Democrat disquised himself as a moderate, the true liberal democrat could be elected president and take the house and senate with him. McGovern proved that a true liberal running as a true liberal cannot win in the middle of a very unpopular war running against an unpopular president.
The people on the right learned nothing from Goldwater's debacle. They still think that if they just run a true conserative that he can persuade voters to his point of view.
The most important rule of politics is that winning candidates always do the same thing. They find out what a majority of voters want to hear and then tell them what they want to hear.
IN a contest between a candidate telling the voters what they want to hear and a candidate telling them they need to change their minds, the candidate telling them what they want to hear always wins.
One thing is pretty clear both the left and the right continue to do the things that prevent their ever being victorious. Only the moderates and stealth candidates ever have a chance at winning.
Bush has been supporting McStain...a person that Conservatives have said en mass that is not qualified or approriate as a Candidate for President...especially after his back-stabbing RINO ways have been exposed.
The RNC is literally ignoring the American public, and it's voters with it's pro-Illegal Immigrant stand that is pi$$ing off 80% in polls.
It seems like the Bush Administration is doing a bang-up job alienating the base that would be needed out in force to prevent a DemonRAT election to the Presidency...is that good strategery?
I agree with other commenters here and that is that what W said was along the lines of the Texan dry sense of humor, and, that he was just being gracious. Not to underestimate his sense of politics, either. But, the rest of what you write, the cult thing, FR, "laughing stock" and all that...it's unsupportable intrigue.
Is it a dry sense of humor that invites Clinton to Kennebunk? Is it a dry sense of wit that allows these slimy Clintons to attack without ever firing back?
Do you regularly sup with someone who is diametrically opposed to everything you say you believe in?
Or is it more likely they find "Common ground".
Tell me, how many impeached rapist P.O.S's do you find "common ground" with? How many do you allow to take the spotlight with your blessing?
And as I said...when a Conservative forum is reduced to a "cheer-leading" pep squad clique, and when Conservatives are attacked for complaining about things that if Clinton were doing them, we'd be screaming about how bad they were...
That is what makes a laughing stock. Blind Support a la Klintonistas....versus reasoned Conservative principles and values that do not change with a letter behind a name as in (D) or (R)!
And I am not alone in my observations or beliefs.
Would it be too much to ask if you could tell us the subject of the book?
Inquiring minds and all that.
Provide proof, or have it removed! Blatant lie and accusation unfounded!
Also, maybe a time-out from the Mods is in order...especially after calling me stupid which I let slide till now!
Oh I know it will be. I've accepted it and have chosen to live my life based on more important things than which political hack is in office.
You know Howlin, some people just don't get good manners and being put on the spot.
BUMP!
Just sickening!
No justice when it comes to the powerful elites anymore. The Bush family should treat Clinton like the diaper rash that he is.
Yeah, I "got" that. ~;-D
First of all, Bush is not going to campaign for Hillary, or endorse her. Her running is all on her own.
Second, Bush's comment was simply noting a fact of history, (Bush, Clinton, Bush..). It is NOT a prediction or an assumption that this is the course of history.
President Bush leaves office in 2008. He isn't running again. He won't actively campaiign for anyone after 2006.
All of this silly paranoia is just that. Stifle yourself.
I know; it was a loaded question, but some on here won't be happy until Bush makes a complete fool of himself in front of the whole country by calling Clinton a scag.
The word "decorum" doesn't seem to be in their vocabulary.
Maybe it's just an example of how grownups should act....
Everyone who doesn't agree with you politically isn't "evil" or "stupid", unless you're a sophmore in HS.
REALLY classy people on this thread, telling you to shut up and calling you names. They don't want to allow people to speak unless they agree with them; now who does THAT sound like?
My guess is no, or if they do, they are alienating people right and left.
Or a RINO or liberal.
