People are always looking for a politican who will do what they define as the conservative thing.
That only happens when a solid majority of voters agree with conservatives. Anyone who can count... I know that leaves some people out, can see that our last two elections were very close. Fools on the left think that if they just offer the voters a true leftist who makes no bones about his leftism, the left will win. Fools on the right think that if they just offer the voter a true right winger who makes no bones about his conservatism the right will win.
Presidents Goldwater and McGovern proved the falacy of that position.
A majority of voters are not conservative and a majority of the votes are not liberal. But both the left and the right must have flunked math. They think that 35 percent of the voters can cast 51 percent of the votes. That has never happened and never will. The 30 percent inthe middle will not allow it.
The Democrats learned nothing from either LBJ or McGovern. LBJ proved that if the Republicans ran a true conservative and a true liberal Democrat disquised himself as a moderate, the true liberal democrat could be elected president and take the house and senate with him. McGovern proved that a true liberal running as a true liberal cannot win in the middle of a very unpopular war running against an unpopular president.
The people on the right learned nothing from Goldwater's debacle. They still think that if they just run a true conserative that he can persuade voters to his point of view.
The most important rule of politics is that winning candidates always do the same thing. They find out what a majority of voters want to hear and then tell them what they want to hear.
IN a contest between a candidate telling the voters what they want to hear and a candidate telling them they need to change their minds, the candidate telling them what they want to hear always wins.
One thing is pretty clear both the left and the right continue to do the things that prevent their ever being victorious. Only the moderates and stealth candidates ever have a chance at winning.
So I take it we should not put you down as a conservative.
