Cheered in Md., official faces recall in La.

Aaron F. Broussard, the president of a Louisiana parish where hundreds of Marylanders helped in the days after Katrina, got a warm welcome from Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. yesterday and the unusual honor of a speaking slot in the middle of his State of the State address.

(snip)

He got a rousing ovation from the Maryland legislators and dignitaries gathered for the speech.

But when he returns home, Broussard will face signs stuck in lawns across the parish that say, "Lyin', Cryin', time to be resignin'" and a petition drive aimed at getting him out of office.

His critics fault him for deciding, as Katrina bore down on Louisiana, to send home the operators of pumps designed to move water from drainage canals into Lake Pontchartrain.

(snip)

Because the pumps were unmanned, water flowed back from the lake into the canals, flooding them and sending water into parts of the county that had stayed dry during major storms for decades.

(snip)

Broussard also faced criticism for an appearance on NBC's Meet the Press in which he tearfully told a story about an elderly person who died because of the federal government's lax response to the hurricane. Many of the details turned out to be untrue, according to The Times-Picayune of New Orleans.

All that was too much for Louis Hamilton, a retired mechanic whose home was badly damaged by the flood. He started the Web site www.recallbroussard.com in an effort to remove the parish president from office before his term ends in 2008. Hamilton describes sending the pump operators home as "one of the absolute worst decisions ever made by any elected official."

"I've organized a recall petition to get him out of office because he's in office for two more years, and that means two more hurricane seasons."

Just when you think the Republican Governor of this little Island of Marxism (Mikulski-ism) on the Chesapeake Bay has his $hit pushed into a nice neat pile he goes and steps in it and tracks smelly dookie all over the house.

Good for them. That is right up there with "Get out of Cheney's House".
