The New Majority Committee burst onto the scene five years ago with a flurry of political gunfire and a manifesto calling for reform of the county Republican Party.
A civil war erupted, with the millionaires of the New Majority funding a $300,000 takeover attempt and the GOP establishment turning from battles with Democrats to fend off the insurgency.
Today when the former combatants meet, you can practically hear strains of "Kumbaya" wafting in the air. The New Majority's drive to bring an abortion-rights, pro-gun control, pro-minority faction into the party has lost its aggressive, strident tone - to the point that the group backed at least one abortion opponent as a candidate in November.
But it remains a champion of the more moderate brand of Republicanism.
"They are integral to the success of the Republican Party," said county GOP Chairman Scott Baugh. "We can't be a majority with just conservatives, and their money is an important component. They are bringing moderates into the party."
--snip--
The New Majority formed an alliance with the Lincoln Club, a group of wealthy Republican business people who were once the county party's largest donors but had grown increasingly critical of how the money was spent.
The intervening years found the New Majority withdrawing its assault on the county party and focusing on helping abortion-rights, pro-gun control, women and minority candidates in primary elections. They also played a significant role in Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's election, contributing $150,000 as a group and hundreds of thousands more in individual donations.

Power to the Moderates! Who cares what it costs us in the long run?
Thought this beared posting to show what conservatives are up against these days in California.
Effectively, conservatives are pretty much partyless.
They are told to adapt,, or to STFU by even some here, but please keep sending them money.
Go Figure .
Enjoy your 'diversity' , Ca GOP.
If things continue as they are "progressing" here in California, it won't be long that you'll just be a footnote in a dusty book.
RINOs have and will always be the poison pill within the Republican Party, essentially operatives from the Democrat Party to turn the GOP into Democrat-lite, screwing everything up they can, our civil liberties and Constitutional rights be damned.
Lincoln Club, New Majority: Wealthy Orange County business owners and leaders. Several are billionaires, not millionaires.
Orange County: 3.0 million population. Median home price Dec. 2005 = $617,000. Home of Nixon library, Disneyland and the California Angels 2002 World Series Champs.
Four of the six most southern counties in California voted for Bush in 2004: San Diego, Orange, Ventura and San Luis Obispo. Two voted Kerry: Lost Angeles and Santa Barbara.
Of one thing I assure the reader: Both Lincoln Club and New Majority would like to win elections. Hence, following guidelines of Reagan, they compromise and join efforts and $$ towards that end.
In the past their influence was recognized in Sacremento and in Washington DC.
And conservatives aren't partiless unless they choose to be. There's always the Constitutional Party. If that mvoe allows the Dems to win an election or two, well, it may just be the wake-up call the GOP, and the country, needs.
Does this sound familiar?
Many of the complaints are valid. The CAGOP has done a disgraceful job developing and encouraging young people to become active in partisan politics leading to a dearth of qualified candidates when public offices go begging. Republican or Conservative clubs are virtually non existent at the secondary level and sparse at the post secondary level in both California's private and public education system/institutions.
Programs designed to educate and encourage party membership among California's two fastest growing demographics, Hispanics and boomers are also absent.
The party has little control over its elected party officials, beyond campaign finance support, and as a consequence, their legislative representatives are generally considered unenlightened chattel, given little voice in legislative matters. The party has been reduced to negotiating deals with the opposition behind closed doors instead of allowing a free discussion in the open light of legislative hearings. The rank and file frequently complain, as witnessed yesterday in a Senate transportation hearing, but those complaints fall upon deaf ears in their own party.
Yes the New Majority has valid complaints. Too bad the NM isn't conservative. With the financial clout it wields the CAGOP could becaome a constructive force in California. Instead the party faithful suffer the indignities of Dick Akerman, Kevin McCarthy, Duf Sundheim and the Wilsonegger gang.
Thanks.. It is too bad the NM has its own agenda and not much of a conservative one, the fact it matches much of the extreme left is of not much concern to some at FR, which is a bit odd as they proclaim themselves to be as conservative as the rest of the "losers" here who will not bend to their agenda or continuing deceit and hype.
I guess the big question would be "Why should a RAT vote for the Repubos if they have become "RATs light"? Why not just vote for the real RAT? My guess is that the Republican Party in California is doomed, a trend that has been going on for the last 30 years. The last real Republican governor of Cal was Reagan; the last somewhat Republican governor was Deukmejian. Pete Wilson was a rino and its been downhill ever since.
Therefore the GOP out here thinks the way to survive is have a tent so big--Ringling Bros could use it.
And then the RINO SOB's run the Democrat play book, calling the truth a lie and a lie the truth, and cry "big tent!", "big tent!". The RINO's accuse conservative Republicans of destroying the GOP, when in fact, it's the RINO's scorched earth policy of "it's the RINO way, or the Democrat-left highway, buddy" that has destroyed the GOP from within.
I haven't sat out an election in my 32 years of eligibility, but I've given up on CA. I don't send cash when I receive requests for contributions, my family doesn't act as GOP volunteers anymore, I don't return Email, phone calls, or read the political junk mail, and if election day happens to fall on a day when I'm doing anything other than sleeping, bahh... I could care less. I've actually spent my money supporting out-of-state GOP conservatives the past four or five years. Whatever I do in California, the result will be the same. My kids both graduate High School this year, and we continue to plan our exit from California.
The RINO's can cajole, blame, jump in summersaults, and kick up all sorts of dust, but I don't really care anymore. The RINO's helped Democrat's establish the current state of affairs, they can live with a corrupt one-party leftist state.

"Of all forms of tyranny the least attractive and the most vulgar is the tyranny of mere wealth, the tyranny of plutocracy."
~ Theodore Roosevelt
In 1912, the "Bull Moose" Party was formed during a fight for the Republican Presidential nomination between President William Howard Taft and former President Theodore Roosevelt. The Bull Moose, or the "Progressive Party" of 1912 was a group led by Roosevelt who felt the GOP had strayed from its core principles.
"They're thinking, pragmatic individuals, looking for new solutions to long-standing problems," said state Sen. Joe Dunn, D-Santa Ana. "They're absolutely an asset to the political process."
Joe Dunn, lauding the NM. That says it all. This guy is about as left as they come.
"helping abortion-rights, pro-gun control,"
so what your saying is - you want Democrats
If they wanted a pro-abortion, pro-gun control party, they should join the democrats. They don't seek "moderation", they seek capitulation in the name of power.
Screw the "big tent".
Well said.
Right on.
You Know growing up in OC in the 80's was great,Repubs all over the place, now it's getting this influx of Rats, and it's sad.
It would certainly be far more honest.
The RNC/CAGOP/New Majority drones are all party-above-principle GOP Big Tent types that wouldn't be caught dead supporting a true conservative. Conservatives in Orange County despise the lot of them.
