CA: New Majority now 'integral' to O.C.'s GOP

The New Majority Committee burst onto the scene five years ago with a flurry of political gunfire and a manifesto calling for reform of the county Republican Party.

A civil war erupted, with the millionaires of the New Majority funding a $300,000 takeover attempt and the GOP establishment turning from battles with Democrats to fend off the insurgency.

Today when the former combatants meet, you can practically hear strains of "Kumbaya" wafting in the air. The New Majority's drive to bring an abortion-rights, pro-gun control, pro-minority faction into the party has lost its aggressive, strident tone - to the point that the group backed at least one abortion opponent as a candidate in November.

But it remains a champion of the more moderate brand of Republicanism.

"They are integral to the success of the Republican Party," said county GOP Chairman Scott Baugh. "We can't be a majority with just conservatives, and their money is an important component. They are bringing moderates into the party."

--snip--

The New Majority formed an alliance with the Lincoln Club, a group of wealthy Republican business people who were once the county party's largest donors but had grown increasingly critical of how the money was spent.

The intervening years found the New Majority withdrawing its assault on the county party and focusing on helping abortion-rights, pro-gun control, women and minority candidates in primary elections. They also played a significant role in Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's election, contributing $150,000 as a group and hundreds of thousands more in individual donations.

Thanks for the reminder.

I don't know whether to curse or applaud Johnson since his reforms eventually allowed our common enemies to gain power through the constitutional back door he created.

I'm sure Governor Johnson would have had a coronary if he would have known the Wilsonegger gang while he was in office. He, most probably, would also have been flabbergasted that principles he espoused were forsaken, allowing a dual nationality governor.

Oh how times have changed.

If that move allows the Dems to win an election or two, well, it may just be the wake-up call the GOP, and the country, needs.

Unfortunately, with the damage done by both Bush #41 and Clinton to the republic and the Constitution, it would only take perhaps two more election cycles to go wrong LIBERAL RAT and the situation would be irretrievable. We are a two party system. Period. Third parties can only act as a spoiler. Ask Perot and Nader. They both took elections away from central party candidates on both sides. RINOS are an unpleasant fact of life. But it would be easier to simply deal with them than to try and build what took over 140 years to create in the first place.

Not 'middle of the road' but full on neo-liberalism.
