The Senate meets at noon today, again in Executive Session, for the 3rd day of debate on the nomination of Samuel Alito to SCOTUS. Not sure, what, if anything, will happen today..Will there be a filabuster?..will anyone show up..might be work while checking out the beginning of the session, to get the lay of the land....
Frist has filed a cloture motion. The cloture vote will be Monday afternoon, then the vote on Alito will occur Tuesday morning. He will be sworn in at noon on Tuesday, in the WH..( a GREAT photo op, BTW)..then he'll run over, with family to the Supreme Court building..for another photo op...then I expect that Alito, Roberts, and most of the justices will appear at the SOTU..
Kerry supposed flew back last night/early this morning from Davos, and is going all out to mount a "filabuster" A few Dems have said they will support it. Hillary isn't sure yet what she wants to do.
Enough Dems have said they do NOT support a filabuster, tat he whole thing appears to be an exercise in posturing and pandering to the left/lib loony base..an earlystart to the 2008 primary season.
Reid really looked disconsolate, "deeply saddened" yesterday afternoon, when he threw in the towel.
So, what will happen today? I expect that some of the virulent anti-Slito Dems will bloviate on the Senate floor. Boxer has yet to speak, IIRC, and we know she's got a LOT to say, right...and the Dems will try and get some media exposure for the weekend..so it seems they have to put on a show today, to set the stage for the "filabuster" on Monday..
I have a suggestion for the GOP leadership. Since they are alternating every hour, when it is the GOP's turn to speak, the senators should just read the text of Sheet's speech into the record..Heck they can even practice waving a Constitution around..
Anyhow, if you're around at noon, or during the day, check out the Senate and/or this thread..
Minutes ago on FNC: Harry Dean says he would support a filibuster.
FYI
The nhe will have to say something during the leader's time today..he's breaking his word again to Frist, eh?
Bob Novack on Fox saying that Reid is in a bad position. Has to say he supports a filibuster but knows he doesn't have the votes.
The dems are in self-destruct mode. Let us not stand in their way. Bring it on!
I don't think so..he can put it to a vote in the caucus....
bump
Report: Two more Democrats are expected to back Alito, killing chance of filibuster - CONRAD AND DORGAN OF NORTH DAKOTA!
how many votes to filibuster?
Another Democrat For Alito?
[Ed Whelan 01/27 11:42 AM]
From AP:
Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., also announced Friday he is "leaning in favor of voting for'' the conservative judge. "It is clear to me that a majority of the American people and the people I represent support his confirmation,'' he said after meeting with Alito in his office.
That's a big surprise...has Pryor announced yet..I bet LIncoln wishes she had waited..I think he will get about 65-67 votes now..
bttt
What seats are up for grabs in 2006 for the senate???
I'd like to see Kerry do a 'real' filibuster. See how long he can stand there, reading, reciting, speaking, before boring himself to sleep.
I'd bet he wouldn't last 2 hours.
If the libDems try to filibuster, Frist to call their bluff and force them to do a real one, not one of these new faux filibusters where they only have to show up a couple of hours a couple of times each week.
John Kerry "I actually did vote for Sam Alito, right before I voted against him."
Yippee...looks like those ads the GOP ran in the Dakotas urging the citizens to tell their Senators to vote for Alito really worked!!
Marking my place...
