SALT LAKE CITY -- A scorpion lived for 15 months without food or water inside the plaster mold of a dinosaur fossil, breaking free only when a scientist broke open the mold.

Don DeBlieux, a paleontologist for the Utah Geological Survey, said he was sawing open the plaster mold when the scorpion wriggled from a crack in a sandstone block.

...The scorpion "must have been hanging out in a crack the day we plastered him," DeBlieux said Thursday.

He discovered the two-inch critter on Jan. 5 after spending two months carefully removing the plaster mold. DeBlieux said he'll spend more than 500 hours cutting the fossilized skull out of sandstone using tiny pneumatic jackhammers. ... Under other circumstances, the scorpion might have met an untimely end, but DeBlieux said he wanted respected the creature's will to survive. He set the scorpion free in a field on the west side of Salt Lake City.

What do hibernating scorpions dream of?

Human toes.

What really sucked was that his only book was "Earth in the Balance."

They are one of only a couple of creatures that can withstand radiation as well. The cockaroach, of all things, is one of them.

"The cockaroach, of all things, is one of them.
"

That's because the cockroach is smoking dope all the time.

La Cucaracha

La cucaracha, la cucaracha
Ya no puede caminar
Porque no tiene, porque le falta
Marijuana que fumar.

(The cockroach, the cockroach
Now he can't go traveling
Because he doesn't have, because he lacks
Marijuana to smoke.)

Been stung about 5 times here in West Texas.I compare it to putting a lit cigarette out on yourself. The times I was stung was at night,in bed, sleeping.Wife has lived here for 50 years and has never been stung.Old folklore here says, once its in your blood,it never goes away.Small critters here are rather nasty. You would be surprised at how tiny a crack they can slip into!

I used Dursban, bought at our local general store. They usually don't sell it retail but this is a ranching area.

Then I figured out they were living inside the clapboard (?) I mean inside the boards that cover the outside of the house. I was spraying around the foundation, etc. but they'd only get into it if they came out. And they can live in there forever.

So I drilled holes through the clapboards, (or siding, I guess I mean) at about head heighth, about four feet apart, and stuck the sprayer into the holes and really blasted it inside there with the Dursban. They've now been gone for a year and I don't expect to have any more trouble.

If you are having trouble with scorpions, I hope this helps.

Well, this scientist
is just assuming the bug
had hid in a crack.

The scorpion might
have been prehistoric and
inside with the fossil!

Just to be certain
they should have mashed up the bug
for carbon dating . . .

That's what I thought this post was going to be about - a prehistoric preserved scorpion. Since that's not the case, I do not understand why this is news.

Findind a scorpion in a shoe with your foot --- priceless.

Unrolling your sleeping bag, hopping on top of it and getting stung on your chest by one --- painfully priceless.

Been there, done that!

>I've gotten plastered before, but never like this...

Wait until the bug
finally crawls home and must tell
the wife where he's been . . .

-----------------------------------------------------------

My life's
in jeopardy
Murdered in cold blood
is what I'm gonna be
I ain't been home since Friday night and now my wife
is coming after me

Give me police protection
Gonna buy a gun
so I can look after number one
Give me a bodyguard
A back belt Judo expert
With a machine gun

Gonna buy a tank and an aeroplane
When she catches up with me
Won't be no time to explain
She thinks I've been with another woman
And that's enough
to send her half insane

Gonna buy a fast car
Put on my lead boots
And take a long, long drive
I may end up spending all my money
But I'll still be alive

All I did was have a bit too much to drink
And I picked the wrong precinct
Got picked up by the law
And now I ain't got time to think

Gonna buy a tank and an aeroplane
When she catches up with me
Won't be no time to explain
She thinks I've been with another woman
And that's enough
to send her half insane

Gonna buy a fast car
Put on my lead boots
And take a long, long drive
I may end up spending all my money
But I'll still be alive

And I'm
oh so
tired of running
Gonna lay down on the floor
I gotta rest some time
so I can get to run some more

She's comin'!
She's comin'!
