Yes, the first suggestion of this story was that Mrs. Alito and HER family knew the Kopechnes. It was that aspect of the story that my research debunked. It was HIS family. But it is true that in only-clid families, the three are very close, and a death of the child is the supreme tragedy.
From her own background as an only child, and daughter, Mrs. Alito would be particularly moved by hearing this story from her in-laws, who knew the Kopchne family.
The rumor that she knew Mary Jo Kopechne was a tighter story. But that one aspect was wrong.

Tears may have been from frustration, I doubt it had anything to do with Koepeckne, her family knew the girl she didn't.
