Lawyer Says He Won't Run for Clinton's Seat

ALBANY, Jan 26 — Edward F. Cox, a Manhattan lawyer and a son-in-law of President Richard M. Nixon, declared Thursday that he would not run for the Senate this year, even though Republicans had been courting him anew to challenge Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The announcement from Mr. Cox ended the prospect of a dynastic clash pitting Mrs. Clinton, a former first lady, against Mr. Cox, who is married to Mr. Nixon's daughter, Tricia.

In a statement, Mr. Cox said that "after careful consideration of the circumstances and conditions as they exist surrounding the race, including the now shortened time frame available to run an aggressive and effective campaign, I will not seek my party's nomination."

Mr. Cox's exit is yet another blow to Republican efforts to mount a credible challenge to Mrs. Clinton, whom many expect to run for president in 2008. His decision seemed to leave John Spencer, a former mayor of Yonkers, as the party's most likely challenger. Mr. Spencer entered the race in the summer, and he has never backed off his bid, despite reports that Republican leaders were looking for other candidates.

Mr. Cox's decision ended a tortured series of deliberations that had him first telling friends early last year that he intended to challenge Mrs. Clinton. In October he pulled out after Gov. George E. Pataki said he would endorse Jeanine F. Pirro's bid to unseat Mrs. Clinton. After Ms. Pirro left the race last month to run for attorney general, some state Republican leaders asked Mr. Cox to reconsider challenging Mrs. Clinton.

The Democrats, perhaps emboldened by Mrs. Clinton's hefty campaign war chest and large lead in the polls, were quick to poke fun at the opposition on Thursday. In a press release, they called Mr. Spencer the "eighth choice" and listed several other...

I like the guy.

He has already taken "the beast" to task for her criticism of Bush's NSA's "domestic spying program" which monitors al-qada phone calls to Muslim fundamentalists here in the US. His words were strong and accurate.

Maybe he can give her a fight. She was fortunate in her last opponent.

"I listen to him every now and then, but I think Hannity is for Rookies who are in the process of seeing the light :-)"

Hannity invites Lib tools onto his show, and then tries to debate them. As if you could really have a debate with a liberal....

Frankly I cannot fault them in deriding the NY GOP.

Julie thanks for the info. on John Spencer who is an unknown in our neck of the woods and undoubtedly to our local newsmen who never seem to mention his name (sarcasm).

John Spencer is the best option available. He's the only person in the running who's won something, and I hear that he was a pretty good Mayor. He won his office by unseating an incumbent and was reelected with 65%. At the very least, he'll force the Hildabeast to explain herself on some of her more out there stances.

The New York GOP establishment should forget their petty turf wars and support him.

BRAVO! It is my fervent hope that Cox will now join forces to get John Spencer elected as the new "Junior Senator" from New York State.

Pataki should be given full credit for engineering Sen. Clinton's re-election.

Yes indeed, he has never said a bad thing about her, he has personally bankrupted the state party and he has disgusted good Republicans into not even caring.

See post # 32 for more on Spencer.

So far I like what I hear from him.....he's not afraid to 'take on the Beast' and has come out swinging.

If I still lived in NY (where I was born & raised)....I'd be a volunteer for his Campaign.

I plan to help him financially as I did Guiliani & Lazio.

I figure even if he doesn't win (and I pray he does) ....We need to help him weaken the Beast's 2008 aspirations.

Leni.......Jackie Mason would be great but I don't think he wants to take a 'pay-cut' from show-biz........LOL

Perhaps Spencer should hire him as a consultant?

Note to NY Times: How about referring to him as the father of a U.S. president's grandson? That's more interesting than "lawyer."
