The new Wal-Mart Stores Inc. location opening Friday in suburban Evergreen Park received a record 25,000 applications for 325 positions, the highest for any one location in the retailer’s history...

The only other site that’s come close to the number of applications is a store in Oakland, California that received 11,000 applications for about the same number of positions last year.

Wal-Mart's Chicago-area manager Chad Donath said generally stores receive between 3,000 and 4,000 applications for about 300 to 450 positions.

He says Wal-Mart has been participating in job fairs and advertising the positions as it does in other communities but this time “we got an amazing response.”

“That incredible number of applications shows the community thinks Wal-Mart is a great place to work,” ...

More bad news for Democrats. Apparantly Walmart is a good place to work.
Now Harry Reid has a place to greet folks when the good folks of Nevada vote him out of his current gloom and doom job!

“That incredible number of applications shows the community thinks Wal-Mart is a great place to work...."

Actually, it shows that people with no skills whatsoever are desperate for any kind of decent job. There are simply too many people in this country who had a poor education, and don't have the qualifications that employers are looking for.

“We just think them coming out and telling the press that they have 25,000 applications is disingenuous,” says Tim Drea, legislative director for United Food and Commercial Workers Local 881. “I think it’s a PR stunt.”

You must be right Tim. There couldn't possibly be 25,000 people wanting jobs that pay $10.99 per hour with no union dues coming out of that.

Which is most definitely NOT WalMart's fault. In fact, for the most part, it's the fault of the same political hacks who keep leading anti-WalMart crusades.

I wonder how many former Ford employees will be applying to Wal-Mart. I'm glad we are a service economy. /s

Actually Wal-Mart IS a fun place to work according to a cousin of mine that works there in the warehouse on the nightshift. He looks forward to every night and while the pay isn't exactly going to make him rich, he has a decent lifestyle and loves every minute of his job.

Life is short. Why be miserable?

It sounds like Wal-Mart would be a great place to work part-time to earn some "mad money" -- right down the street in your neighborhood where is it easy to put in some part-time hours.

25,000 applicants for 325 positions? That is on average 75 applicants for 1 position! Either unemployment in and around Evergreen Park is pretty high, or people just love working for WalMart.

How come there are so many people out of work in utopia? Must be Bush's fault. FL unemployment rate hit 3.3 this week, but that's not Bush's fault. That must be a lie.

Hi proxy_user:

"...Actually, it shows that people with no skills whatsoever are desperate for any kind of decent job. There are simply too many people in this country who had a poor education, and don't have the qualifications that employers are looking for..."

I believe your explanation is much closer to the truth than the Wal-Mart cheerleaders saying how "great" the place is. It is very hard to believe that the retailer is so magnetic an employer that 25,000 folks are willing to beat down the doors to become career greeters, stockboys, and cashiers.

Probably a lot of those 25,000 people already have jobs but get paid less than the $10.99 per hour that Wal-Mart is offering.

Those numbers are crazy. Even 10:1 applicants:hires is madness, I think. I would have to guess that most are longshots and underqualified.

Retail isn't a career anyway, unless you're managing or at least supervising.
