Police arrest three suspects

- Laredo police bomb squad investigators continue investigations into an incident involving a grenade that exploded inside a home in the 500 block of North Stone on Sunday.

As of Tuesday evening, three adults had been arrested and two juveniles had been detained in connection with the case. Police said the suspects will face drug-related federal charges.

Authorities executed a search warrant at the residence Monday and found several grams of heroin and marijuana. A .45-caliber handgun was also found at the scene.

Police were dispatched to the home after witnesses heard an explosion come from the residence just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

When police arrived at the scene, the resident, identified as 19-year-old Rolando Medina, told them someone had thrown a grenade inside the home. He refused to cooperate further with officials and was arrested.

Medina was taken into custody Sunday and charged with failure to identify.

Meanwhile, the Laredo Police Department conducted a follow-up investigation into the cause of the explosion.

Investigators at the scene said it appeared the explosion did not come from outside the home, but rather came from within, possibly as an accident.

Investigators recovered shrapnel from the walls of the living room that will be analyzed further.

The three adult suspects were identified as Rolando Medina, 19, Alfredo De La Fuente, 31, of the 300 block of Mendiola, and Victor Esquivel, 19, of the 1200 block of Willow.

The three were arrested and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and felony engaging in organized criminal activity and transported to the Webb County jail; the two juveniles are pending charges, police said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will adopt the case for federal prosecution, police said.

Anyone with information should contact the police at 795-2800.
