I would assume that GW checked this appointment out with his good friend Senior Fox before appointing her. He must have, because HE SURE AS HELL DIDN'T CHECK IT OUT WITH THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!!!!

Your logic escapes me.

So all the nieces of your high school classmates are de facto highly qualified for critical government jobs?

"She has the ability to master the job"? People in these positions are supposed to be selected because they have already proven their ability to handle the job.

The buddy system rules.

"...So why are you so sure the Bush administration doesn't care and what evidence is there this is cronyism?..."

Please tell this former California resident you are kidding?
Actually this is all part of plan to get Mrs. Clinton into the Whitehouse, just like his daddy got her husband there.

She has the ability to master the job.

Perhaps so. But a government agency that plays a key role in HOMELAND SECURITY and the WAR ON TERROR is not the place for on the job training of an executive internship. If she screws up even once we could lose an American city to terrorists. President Bush should have chosen somebody with experience. Her Uncle Dick would have been a far more suitable and appropriate choice. He has experience commiserate with the job.

That is your opinion, but Julie thinks exactly like her uncle and will do a wonderful job.

She has the ability to master the job.

Unfortunately her job will be to see nothing is done to close the borders or expel illegal aliens, but to keep the status quo...its a bad move and does nothing to instill confidence in something being done about our immigration problems..We need an ex General who kicks butt and takes names, who will shut the border down in a few weeks and tell Vicente Fox to pound sand....

Hi there investigateworld.

I wasn't making a judgement one way or the other. The poster, also the author of the piece, wrote: She will not face a congressional examination of her qualifications or lack there of, so we really have no idea whether we should be pleased or displeased with this appointment

Then in his comments he writes: Does Bush ave a thing for women named Miers or Myers - or is this another Laura recommendation?

I was pointing out that the author/poster **satan** is either contradicting himself or believes that women are to be shunned for high appointments. A later poster pointed out that it might be because she is related to some general or other muckety-muck, which might be the case, I don't really care. My secondary point is that this is a worthless vanity and is only one person's view on the matter. Make of it what you will.

That is your opinion, but Julie thinks exactly like her uncle and will do a wonderful job.

ICE has huge responsibilities and is failing at most of them. Our interior immigration enforcement is non-existent and our port security and customs function is in shambles. A "wonderful job" would mean turning that situation around. I doubt very seriously she is going to even come close to fixing the problems at ICE. By making that prediction you are setting her up to fail.

I admire her Uncle and it is clear that she comes from good genetic stock and has good connections. That may be enough for her to do an adequate job but on the other hand it is also clear that she is woefully lacking in experience. If the job is so unimportant that we can hand it to a junior executive with no experience then we should just save the taxpayers some money by eliminating it.

My opinion is that I don't approve of this appointment anymore than I would have approved of making her Uncle Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff when he was 35 years old. It shows poor judgement and a lack of seriousness on the part of the person making the appointment.

Category: Corruption

Cronyism:

Cronyism is partiality to long-standing friends, especially by appointing them to public office without regard for their qualifications. In political terms, the word "cronyism" is almost always used derogatorily.

In the Bush Administration, the role of the ICE Director is to aid and abet an invasion of illegals, at the behest of the cheap labor lobby. The Director must try to look like the ICE is doing something, when it is not, and must spin risible excuses for its (in)action.

The position smashes to powder the credibility of anyone craven enough to accept it, so it must therefore go to someone bereft of credibility.

That is where Myers comes in.

Gary:

You wrote: "Gen Dick Myers is an old high school classmate of mine. You will not find a finer person anywhere. That said, Julie Myers is very close to her uncle, and very smart and talented. She has the ability to master the job."

I have been very close to my Uncle, who is a fine, upstanding family man, a Deacon at his church, and is the Chief of Police in his town.

NONE of that means that I am qualified to be magically tunred into a police Captain tomorrow, no matter how smart and talented I might be, nor whatever my abilities are.

With a year of very specific training, by qualified instructors, followed by a year of actual in-the-field experience as a rookie, MAYBE I would make a good street cop on my uncle's police force. But I would not and should not be given supervisory charge over other, more experienced police officers until I had EARNED that position.

Not even my Uncle or his boss, the Mayor, want to see that happen. They aren't morons. Bush certainly is, but My Uncle and the Mayor aren't.

No matter how great a guy Dick Myers might be, that does not translate into any ability whatsoever on the part of his kin. What next, Dick Myers' second cousin who can't drive gets to run the Department of Transportation? Or Myers' great aunt, with no flying experience, gets to run the FAA? Maybe Bush should appoint Dick Myers' sixteen-year-old great nephew to run the Department of Defense. At least he has SOME experience in warfare, playing "Dungeons and Dragons".

The point is not how nice a guy Julie Myers' uncle is, nor how close she is to him. The point is that she has ZERO qualifications, ZERO experience, and ZERO practical understanding of the Federal agency to which she has been magically transported to the head of.

Instead, she is on record as saying that she is going to depend on the folks already working at that agency to hold her hand and nursemaid her through her tenure there.

That does not sound anything like "leadership" to me.

There is absolutely no reason for Julie Myers to be at the head of ICE, other than her familial and political connections. Please tell me what else could have possibly gotten her there; or did I just miss a staff meeting where this was explained?

Julie Myers has been magically turned into the head of a federal agency. She has no qualifications for the job. She has not EARNED the privilege to lead others who are more qualified. Those are the facts.

THAT, my friends, is defined where I come from as "Grade A Horse Manure". You can call it a Rose Bouquet if you like, but it will still stink.

Jack, I am 63 years old, the same as Dick, and I am telling you the lady can easily handle the job.
