Myers Appointment to Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Manassas Journal Messenger

Manassas Journal Messenger Editorial, January 24, 2006

Myers appointment makes us wonder

It is abundantly clear that Washington is not listening to pleas for immigration enforcement from communities like ours. In fact, it looks as if the Bush administration doesn’t care at all.

During the recent holiday recess of Congress, President Bush used a tool implemented by other presidents to slip some appointments past the congressional approval radar.

Among them was the naming of Julie L. Myers as Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE in the Washington vernacular.

If the residents of Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park were to take a good look at this appointment, they would probably notice that it appears to be in the spirit of Michael Brown-style cronyism. By most accounts, the 36-year-old Myers is inexperienced in both management and immigration issues.

Her published resume includes two years’ experience as a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, and several jobs in the past four years in the departments of Commerce, Justice and Treasury. Most recently she was employed as a special assistant to President Bush.

Her appointment is noteworthy primarily because of her connections:

She is the niece of Gen. Richard B. Myers, who just retired as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff, and she is married to John Wood, chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security.

She will not face a congressional examination of her qualifications or lack there of, so we really have no idea whether we should be pleased or displeased with this appointment.

The bureau she will lead - if lead is the proper word - has more than 20,000 employees and a $4 million budget.

Its mission is to hold and remove illegal aliens, investigate alien smuggling, illegal arms exports, and money laundering; and fine the employers of illegal aliens.

Since that last item has become a joke, perhaps that responsibility won’t take up much of her time.

One wonders if anyone in the administration gives a hoot about the problems and social imperatives our communities face from a growing illegal population.

So why are you so sure the Bush administration doesn't care and what evidence is there this is cronyism?

This is King Jorge flipping the bird at America.

Its a patronage appointment and this woman has no background indicating that she is capable of carrying off the job.

I'd say this quote from the article is the reason I think it just might be cronyism:

"She is the niece of Gen. Richard B. Myers, who just retired as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of staff, and she is married to John Wood, chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security."

Cronyism in government? I'm shocked!!

A bureau of 20,000 people and $4 mil. budget is small by today's government standards. Nothing to see here, folks, move on...

Well, you're right to a certain extent. However, ICE is, or should be, a big part of our control of illegals. That this crony should be appointed to that post doesn't bode well for increased border security, IMO.

It seems a continuation of the current non-enforcement policy.

Not $4 million, $4 BILLION.

Don't expect any roundup of illegals anytime soon.
Somebody will probably have to show her where the borders are.

Start building the fence.

It should be made a felony for Criminals who overstay their visas and Invaders.

I believe we should give amnesty to these poor CRIMINALS or INVADERS.
This should be a 2 week amnesty to get the heck out of our Country.
The ones who ignore this amnesty should be buried in a tent city jail and fined $10,000 or buried elsewhere.
All aiders and abettors of these CRIMINALS or INVADERS should get 1 year in a tent city jail and a $10,000 fine for each CRIMINAL aided.
Those in government should be the first ones charged.

"The bureau she will lead - if lead is the proper word - has more than 20,000 employees and a $4 million budget."

That budget gives everyone a $200 yearly salary.

The bureau she will lead - if lead is the proper word - has more than 20,000 employees and a $4 million budget. If the average wage of an employee was 36K a year, that'd be $720,000,000. But the budget is only 4 Million? Uh, okay. But, we can't afford a fence, plus it would be mean, and it wouldn't work. /sarc

"Not $4 million, $4 BILLION."

I think you're right. That's got to be a typo.

"Don't expect any roundup of illegals anytime soon.

Yep.

Gen Dick Myers is an old high school classmate of mine. You will not find a finer person anywhere. That said, Julie Myers is very close to her uncle, and very smart and talented. She has the ability to master the job.

Judging the record on immigration law enforcement and securing our borders, the Bush administration does not care and is not listening. This Myers' appointment is indeed crony-ism.

By most accounts, the 36-year-old Myers is inexperienced in both management and immigration issues.

I guess no one had a 15-year old cousin named Skippy to handle the job.

To make a military analogy, they are taking what would be a job for at least a 2 or 3 star general and giving it to a major or lieutenant colonel. Someone is not serious about this position. Julie Myers might be very competent, but she needs at least ten more years of experience before taking a big job like this.

She has the ability to master the job.

Does this mean giving us the "Potomac Shuffle"? That Chernoff character sure has had to talk out of both sides of his mouth. I feel sorry for him. I'll soon be feeling sorry for this gal.
