Kennedy Statement on Nomination of Judge Alito

Mr. Chairman, the stakes in this nomination could not be higher. This is the vote of a generation. If confirmed, Judge Alito will have an enormous impact on our basic rights and liberties for years and even decades to come.
After all, the Supreme Court is the guardian of our most cherished rights and freedoms. They are symbolized in the four eloquent words inscribed above the entrance to the Supreme Court: "Equal Justice Under Law." Those words are meant to guarantee that our courts will be an independent check on abuses of power by the other two branches of government. They are a commitment that our courts will always be a place where the poor and the powerless can stand on equal footing with the wealthy, and the privileged. Each of us on this Committee has a constitutional duty to ensure that anyone confirmed to the Court will uphold that clear ideal.

I just don't see where the clear meaning of "Equal Justice Under Law" has anything to do with the balance of powers.
Equal Justice Under Law is a fine thing. The Democrats should try it sometime. The balance of powers is a good idea. The Democrats should try that sometime, as well. But other than that, they have nothing to do with one another.

Thank God we have Ted Kennedy to ensure that the rights of average Americans will continue to be protected from abuse by self-serving politicians in powerful government offices.

You're expecting Sterno Boy to make sense? The man hasn't been sober or had a coherent thought since the Eisenhower administration.

Maybe what they have in common is that Democrats don't understand either concept.

Each of us on this Committee has a constitutional duty to ensure that anyone confirmed to the Court will uphold that clear ideal. Actually no, Senator. All the Supreme Court is supposed to do is weigh the constitutionality of the cases brought before it. Nothing more, nothing less.

The man hasn't....had a coherent thought since the Eisenhower administration. Not true.In July of 1969 he had several coherent thoughts, thoughts so coherent,in fact, that they allowed him to stay out of the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Walpole and allowed him to fool a majority of Massachusetts voters.
Well,on second thought,I guess it's never been *that* difficult to fool Massachusetts voters.

Is "Equal Justie Under Law" in the Constitution - or is it simply a meaningful and hopeful phrase adorning an architectural feature?

Yes, they will start to fall more in line with what the Constitution says they are. Who knows, it might also be a good thing for the current Eminent Domain atrocities...

Who is Kennedy trying to impress with this faulty rhetoric?
Could he embarrass himself any further? (I take the last part back...)

I think staffers write nearly every word, form every opinion and even pick the suits out for Robert Byrd, Ted Kennedy, and probably Patrick Leahy.
And John Kerry has the servants pick out his stuff...of course, if his tie and socks don't match, the lowlife is sent packing.
