It's impossible to gauge the extent of the damage that Mayor Ray Nagin's "chocolate city" and "God's punishing America for invading Iraq" remarks inflicted on New Orleans last week. Suffice it to say that we survived Katrina, but I'm not sure if we can survive Nagin. His apology the next day notwithstanding, Nagin has become a cancer on the city's fledgling recovery. His political and governmental incompetence was bad enough before his MLK Day rant; now he has become an international embarrassment, another post-Katrina blight on New Orleans' reputation.
(snip)
Sadly, the fallout extends far beyond the damage to Nagin's political future. The real damage can be counted in the millions -- if not billions -- in federal and private sector aid this clown is going to cost our city. Congress can finally stop accusing us of being corrupt. Nagin has given them a fresh argument: that we're stupid, incompetent, and led by a mindless racist.

The guy is no crazier than SF's Mayor.
The way things work... if a conservative makes a stupid statement, they are driven from office. If a liberal makes a stupid statement, they are promoted.
But then, its this distinction that is driving the conservative shift in America, so we should be glad I guess...
In some of his appearances, I swear he looked absolutely stoned on something. It wouldn't surprise me if we hear about him entering a treatment center soon.
Clance, my man, I love New Orleans, but at least two thirds of that argument was already manifest.
The difference is that the mayor of SF is not asking the taxpayers around the nation to give him billions of dollars to rebuild his city. For this reason, Nagin has to go.
Nobody outside of San Francisco really cares much about how competent or sane their mayor is.
Nagin should be charged with negligent homicide. He will be, it is hoped, chucked out on his tin ear in the upcoming NO elections that are finally on track. Nagin is not merely amusing, he is deadly. And therein lies the difference.

AN OPEN LETTER TO TIM ROBBINS, DAVID GEFFEN, CHRIS MATTHEWS, MAUREEN DOWD + JEANINE PIRRORE: a not-so-modest proposal concerning hillary clinton
Dear Concerned Americans,
Hillary Clinton's revisionist tome notwithstanding, 'living history' begets a certain symmetry. It is in that light that I make this not-so-modest proposal on this day, exactly 64 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The context of our concern today--regardless of political affiliation--is Iraq and The War on Terror, but the larger fear is that our democracy may not survive.
We have the requisite machines, power and know-how to defeat the enemy in Iraq and elsewhere, but do we have the will?
In particular, do we have the will to identify and defeat the enemy in our midst?
Answerable to no one, heir apparent in her own mind, self-serving in the extreme, Hillary Clinton incarnates this insidious new threat to our survival.
What we decide to do about Missus Clinton will tell us much about what awaits us in these perilous new times.

One only has to look at D.C. to know and wonder at the phenomenon of what is logical to thinking people and what is routinely voted for in such places is in no way the same, nor even close to the same thing.

You know....this New Orleans disaster has got me wondering concerning mayors and LE. Suppose another major city - say Houston or Los Angeles was forewarned of a natural disaster or terrorist attack forecast to kill thousands of it's citizens. A limited amount of time to get out of town. Would the mayor of that city stay? Would the LE stay? Or would they leave with their families? Do not mistake these questions as a defense of the bottom feeder Nagin or his LE that pulled a disappearing act.
Louisiana had a new evacuation plan that had been discussed a great deal prior to Katrina which called for the lowest lying areas of the state to be evacuated 50 hours before tropical storm force winds were predicted to make landfall, the areas just above that to be evacuated 40 hours prior, and the Greater New Orleans area to be evaucated 30 hours before.

I evacuated voluntarily approximately 30 hours before Katrinas tropical storm winds hit, if not less than 30, and at that point there still had not been any mandatory evacuation ordered.
I left at 2 pm Saturday. Contraflow had not been set up yet. My sister left Sunday, only because she saw Nagin on television saying that President Bush had called him in the middle of the night urging him to evacuate his city because Katrina was going to be very serious.
I remember as the 50, 40 and 30 hour deadlines approached and went by wondering what the hell they were doing, why weren't they calling for evacuation.
