Abortion Leads to Substance Abuse for Significant Number of Women

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois, January 23, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) –A recent study reinforces previous findings that women who have abortions frequently turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with the aftereffects of the trauma.

Author Pricilla Coleman, professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Bowling Green State University, said studies show women who have abortions are up to five times more likely to use drugs and alcohol, and to smoke, than women who have not had an abortion, in a research review published in Current Women’s Health Reviews.

Coleman said studies show women are more likely than men to rely on drugs or alcohol for help in dealing with severe personal trauma, such as physical or sexual abuse, or illness and family dysfunction.

Dr. David Reardon, a post-abortion expert and director of research at the Elliot Institute, an non-profit organization that tracks the impact of abortion, said there are at least 21 studies linking induced abortion and substance abuse, in an Elliot Institute press release.

“Many women who have experienced abortion have unresolved emotional issues related to their abortion,” he said. “Substance abuse can provide an easily accessible way to self-medicate their pain and numb their emotions.”

Reardon said mental health workers need to recognize the devastating effects of abortion, and find ways of helping women deal with the buried fallout.

"If treatment for substance abuse or other mental health problems fails to address underlying factors such as abortion, the treatment may be ineffective and women are likely to continue to turn to substances such as drugs or alcohol to cope," Reardon said.

Studies have also found significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety disorders, suicidal tendencies, psychiatric hospitalization and poor bonding with and parenting of later children, in women who have had an abortion.

Except for the rare unfeeling woman who views infanticide as a convenient form of birth control, there are almost always severe negative consequences for the woman.

Is junk science really necessary here?

Short of better studies, common sense says that it is being screwed up or irresponsible that leads both to unwanted pregnancies and to substance abuse.

Abortion is not wrong because it is bad for the mother. It is wrong because it is bad for the baby. Stay on message.

How do we know that, generally speaking, women who seek abortions are women who engage in risky behaviors in addition to the type of sexual behavior that might lead them to have an unwanted/unplanned pregnancy?

If more women begin to understand how harmful abortion is for THEM, maybe they will think twice before having their baby murdered.

As I keep saying on these threads about the negative effect of abortions on women, maybe the negative effect came from the conversation that immediately preceeded the abortion....

Woman: I'm pregnant. It's your baby. We could get married....

Man: Married ? In your dreams. Get rid of it and get lost.

I suspect the truth is most of these women were into substance abuse long before any abortion. They used sex to get more drugs and then had the abortion.

I am against abortion for sure . .

. . .but think this is beginning to sound like pulling out of the hat here. . .no doubt many women do go on to substance abuse. . .but did these particular women do so because of abortion or because of time and place. . .and life circumstances. . .which by any reasonable indicators; are already flashing if they needed to get an abortion to begin with - in many cases. . .

Favoring the KISS principle. . .we know there is one good reason to not support abortion or to have one; and that really should be enough for people to understand. . .however they learn the lesson here.

The libs will point to this (as they do with the higher rates of drug-abuse/suicide among homosexuals) and say that it is societies fault for stigmatizing them, and laws should be enacted labeling any anti-abortion speech as 'hate speech'.

How are they stigmatized. The only way anybody knows if a woman has had an abortion is if she tells people.

And when another study comes out debunking this one, you will have staked shaky ground and lost it. Stick to the solid path, and you will do better.

It flabberghasts me that abortion is the ONLY medical procedure that you undergo that you don't sign some type of informed consent. Women aren't told about the high incidence of severe depression, increased chances of some types of cancers and problems with other pregnancies. If anyone can think of medical procedure that is performed without informed consent I would be interested, I don't think oral surgery does, but that is all I can think of.

Wrong conversation. It went like this: "I want an abortion.

Stick to the solid path, and you will do better.

How's this then?:
In the past 33 years, OVER 40 million babies have been massacred. That is more people than were murdered by Hitler and Stalin COMBINED.

You're kidding, right? This question is as fatuous as asking how we know kids wearing ipods are listening to music.
