Fickle CNN slouches to the right
MarketWatch ^ | 23 January 2005 | Jon Friedman

The cable network's Headline News outlet is poised to give a primetime slot to radio talk-show host Glenn Beck. He goes against everything that CNN has claimed to stand for -- a first-rate pedigree, a non-biased point of view and understated excellence. Beck's chief qualification is that he personifies controversy.

Then again, who do I think I'm kidding with this high-minded blather? OF COURSE, controversy alone is enough. In fact, it's PLENTY. If Beck catches on with his own unique audience, he'll get a shot to go on CNN. Then CNN will reckon that Bill O'Reilly will no longer be a factor on Fox and MSNBC's Joe Scarborough can go find himself a new country.

[. . .]

It's no secret that CNN has been panicking as rival Fox News relentlessly widened the ratings gap between itself and the former "Clinton News Network." Rather than stick to one journalistic style and let an audience gravitate to it (the secret to Fox's success), CNN changed approaches and personnel regularly and, naturally, failed to establish a clear identity with the public and the critics.

[. . .]

The talk-radio host Beck, as the witty Tim Goodman of the San Francisco Chronicle pointed out, "is just to the right of Attila the Hun." This is the guy who criticized some people who lost loved ones on 9/11 because they didn't agree with his political views. For good measure, he blasted some of the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

CNN shouldn't be running a news supermarket. It should stand for something -- anything. Not only would it be a better network, but the morale of its beleaguered troops would go up. Pssst -- so might those precious ratings.

Well, maybe CNN's slouching right, but they're slamming the President tonight on Lou Dobbs over an appearance at Kansas State. Just one shiv in the side after another.

I remember this well. These were not 9/11 "families" - it was the Jersey Girls when they were on one of their Bush-hate-fests. This author shows a lot by what he leaves out.

Primetime?

I'd rather watch Glenn Beck than Bill the Bloviator O'Rilly.

Lou Dobbs is Pat Buchanan's love child.

I frequently listen to Glenn Beck, and he is easily the least "mean" of the conservative radio hosts. He has a unique show, too. More like Rush's show, but even less political over all.

They can hire Rush. I will not watch the channel.

Sweet. I will be watching.

Now those are words I never thought I'd say in public "I plan on watching CNN"

I can't stand either one of them. Glenn will be just as much of a megalomaniac in 6 months as Bill O.

I don't know the details, but since he's gonna be on the fast moving Headline News channel of CNN's, it's probably just going to be a moment's commentary or some such.

No offense to Mr. Beck, but I will NEVER watch CNN. This is just a ploy to try and boost their ratings. Don't fall for it. Anything that benefits CNN is a negative in my book.

Well what can I say?

Dems are trying to force a "fairness" bill to congress so that every station will look like unbiased and fair PBS.
