WASHINGTON -- Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito heads into the first vote of his high court candidacy with victory assured Tuesday in a Senate committee, but Democratic opponents are still working to dampen his support in the full Senate. The GOP-controlled Judiciary Committee is expected to advance the nomination of Alito _ President Bush's pick to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor _ on the strength of its 10 Republican senators. There are eight Democrats on the panel.

the comittee vote is meaningless, we knew it would be 10-8 from the moment Alito's name was mentioned.
the action comes later this week, the Dems are going to float some new allegations to bolster a shot at a filibuster, to test whether the Rs really have 50 solid votes to change the rules.
I predict Landreau of La...she has to make up for the Katrina debacle, plus there are a whole lot of pro-life Catholics in Louisiana!
Has Sen. Lieberman said how he will vote?
I think that Byrd will be in a tight battle in West Virginia. He will have to vote to confirm Alito, so the old Byrd will be in an uncomfortable place nezt week. I predict Alito gets 58 votes, hoping here that RINOs Snow and Chaffee do not abandon ship
Has anyone heard how NJ senators Lautenberg or Menendez are voting?
Bob Torricelli has not told Lautenberg how he will vote yet, but Torricelli will tell him to vote against Alito.

You are correct, sheets is going to be in a re-election battle but his strategy will be to call Alito a white n****er, as he did on TV several years ago. The msm will ignore his slur and he is hoping that that are enough kluklers that are still controlling the voting machines in VW to get him re-elected.
I thought Lautenberg came out saying he would vote to confirm Alito.
Have you noticed the "Klanman" has been AWOL at all of the mining accidents?I wonder if the people of WV will start to question his health as well as his politics.
That's because the mines are not named after him.
>I predict Byrd will join Nelson in voting to confirm.
Byrd must be the only true paleoconservative among democrats. Surprised he hasn't moved to our camp.
