An Army judge advocate general (JAG) temporarily banned Army and Marine Corps snipers from using a highly accurate open-tip bullet. The JAG, we are told, mistakenly thought the open-tip round was the same as hollow-point ammunition, which is banned. The original open-tip was known as Sierra MatchKing and broke all records for accuracy in the past 30 years.

More like a MilSpec 10mm cork gun.

There is no way we can win a war with lawyers calling the shots.

Didn't Tom Cruise immortalize the JAG in "A Few Good Men?"
:-)
When I watch that movie now, I switch the "crime" to the alleged torturing of Al Qaeda prisoners (lapdances, etc).
Then I hear Nicholson say "You want the truth. You can't HANDLE the truth."...and I realize that the movie producers were being cowards by making the crime in the movie a real crime, instead of something only their fellow liberals would agree with.

...The sniper lost his job over a security infraction in reporting the JAG." Do we know the sniper's name? Was he reinstated after the JAG's error was corrected? Surely he should be praised rather than punished.

The difference between the open-tip and the hollow point is that the open tip is a design feature that improves accuracy while the hollow point is designed for increasing damage when it hits a target. If you're shooting a 50 cal with intentions of killing the target, what the hell difference does it make what the projectile is?
What am I missing?

I can make a hollow tipper with a buck knife; out of almost any round, in a couple of seconds.
There are other most fabulous things you can do with them too, with a dab of contact incendiary or explosive material that is readily available to those in combat.
Pass laws and endlessly bloviate on the Senate floor, the people who are doing the dying will decide what is legitimate on the battlefield regardless of the chitwhores back stateside.
Put your nuts in your hands when you face them down. They know what the score is in reality and know and how to win, otherwise they are as dead as their friends who hesitated and listened to the pissant defeatists...

After Army lawyers were finally alerted to the JAG's action, the order was lifted and the JAG was notified that the open tip was perfectly legal for use by snipers. However, the reversal was followed by the Army officials' taking retaliation against a sniper who blew the whistle on the bogus order. The sniper lost his job over a security infraction in reporting the JAG. Huh?
Why? Didn't he do a good thing by reporting the mistake.
To: The Great RJ
Does it also read that the jagette was the one who retaliated against the sniper that made the issue known to her superiors?

If the JAG bitch in question (whom I suspect
intended to hurt our war effort) was not in a position to issue orders (which she isn't), then why was the order obeyed?

Disgusting beyond belief. PC dominates American society to its core.

Using less accurate ammo obviously decreases accuracy which also increases collateral damage, and allows terrorists to get away...
Open tip is not the same as hollow point btw...
Unless you are an ignoramus or a friend to our enemies...

If they're having to use M60 rounds, it means 7.62mm, not 50cal. Significant difference from the .50 in both range and accuracy over that range.
To: cowboyway
It is considered cruel and unusual punishment... so to speak. The survival rate is much higher than a hollow point...
I agree with you. Isay the same thing when I see a speed limit reduced only 10 miles an hour aound construction on a highway... 65 down to 55... I tell my wife, does the body know the difference if it gets hit at that speed?
