Right Wing News emailed more than 230 right-of-center bloggers and asked them to send us a ranked list 1-5 of the candidates that they would most like to take the Republican nomination for President in 2008 and the 1-5 candidates they'd least like to see as the Republican nominee in 2008. Representatives from the following 58 blogs responded...
Aaron's CC, Absinthe & Cookies, The American Mind, The Anchoress, AtlanticBlog, Atlas Shrugs, Backcountry Conservative, La Shawn Barber, The Baseball Crank, Betsy's Page, BlameBush!, Boi From Troy, Byrd Droppings, Commonwealth Conservative, DANEgerus Weblog, Dodgeblogium, Dr. Sanity, Eckernet, Euphoric Reality, Gateway Pundit, GayPatriot, Generation Why?, GOP Vixen, Guardian Watchblog, Hog Haven, The House of Wheels, Hud's Blog-O-Rama, Inside Larry's Head, Iowa Voice, The Jawa Report, ~Jewels~of~the~Jungle~, Jihad Watch, JunkYardBlog, The Key Monk, Knowledge Is Power, Multiple Mentality, My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, Newmark's Door, A North American Patriot, The Nose On Your Face, The Patriette, The Patriot Blog!, Peaktalk, Damian Penny, The Pink Flamingo Bar & Grill, QandO, Red-State, Right Side Redux, Right Wing News, Isaac Schrödinger, Sister Toldjah, Slobokan's Site Of Schtuff, Solomonia, Stop The ACLU, Suitably Flip, Toys in the Attic, WILLisms, Wuzzadem
All participating bloggers were provided with the following list of potential candidates although they were also allowed to select nominees who were not listed...
George Allen: (Senator, Virginia) Haley Barbour (Governor of Mississippi) Sam Brownback: (Senator, Kansas) Jeb Bush: (Governor of Florida) Dick Cheney: (VP, Wyoming) Bob Ehrlich: (Governor of Maryland) Ernie Fletcher: (Governor of Kentucky) Bill Frist: (Senate Majority Leader, Tennessee) Newt Gingrich: (Former Speaker of the House, Georgia) Rudy Giuliani: (Former NYC mayor) Chuck Hagel: (Senator, Nebraska) Mike Huckabee (Governor of Arkansas) John McCain: (Senator, Arizona) Bill Owens: (Governor of Colorado) George Pataki: (Governor of New York) Tim Pawlenty: (Governor, Minnesota) Condoleeza Rice: (Secretary of State, California) Tom Ridge: (Former Homeland Security Advisor, Former Pennsylvania Governor) Mitt Romney: (Massachusetts Governor) Mark Sanford: (South Carolina Governor) Tom Tancredo: (Congressman, Colorado)
As I mentioned earlier, the bloggers were allowed to make 1-5 ranked selections. Those selections were weighted as follows...
1) Worth 2 points 2 or 3) Worth 1.5 points 4 or 5) Worth 1 point
So, for example, a candidate who received two first place votes (4 points), a third place vote (1.5 points), & and three fifth place votes (3 points), would receive a grand total of 8.5 points.
Also, keep in mind that the scoring cut-off to be included in the lists below was 5 points. If a candidate received less than that, his/her score was not listed.
Here are the selections that were made with the total number of points each candidate tallied following his/her name in parentheses...

Hagel?
Several candidates showed up on both the best and worst lists. This could be a bloody primary season.
"And for your cocktail tonight, madam, would you prefer the Arsenic or the Cyanide?"
McCain has NO CHANCE of being nominated by the GOP. I'm hoping he's convinced to switch parties. I'd love to go to his going away party.
No, the top choice for the GOP is someone seen as supportive of the President's Doctrine on the WOT followed by two "perceived" conservatives. Forget the names and read the signal the folks are sending.
They want a conservative and they want someone unapologetically in support of the WOT to carry G.W.B.'s plan forward.
Look at the folks they don't want. Questionable (McCain/Terrorist rights) or outright hostile to the WOT (Hagel) followed by a northeastern Republican (Liberal) and someone seemingly weak in leadership (Frist) all linked together as questionable in their conservatism at best.
Considering most blogs tend to be "lighter" in their "conservatism" that are used for these surveys, it's telling McCain scores so badly. We know among the core of conservatives he's on the outs, but he can't even score well in "center right" blogs.
I know - to sad.
I loved how she handled her inquisition by the Democrats. She's smart as hell, has a vast amount of knowledge AND experience which goes back to the Reagan years. She's not just some text book educated idiot and she doesnt chase a news camera like McCain. McCain is to the news like a lawyer is to an ambulance.
I think a Condi Rice would keep the Conservative movement going.
Red6
Yeah, apparently the second least desired nominee for '08. McCain, of course, first as least desirable. Since Hagel (Nebraska Senator) is one of al Jazeera's favorite soundbites, it's no wonder.
Wow, Tucker Carlson will be crushed.
IMO, that is the signal the court has sent in a few cases notably this one and parental notification case. While the MSM/DNC are not happy, apparently the Court has uniamously agreed they aren't going to rush opinions through before a new Justice joins. They'll wait for Alito with O'Connor's consent.
Though, just because Kennedy went one way on this before, doesn't mean he will again. Trust the MSM/DNC/D.C. elite are cozying up to him now.
"No, the top choice for the GOP is someone seen as supportive of the President's Doctrine on the WOT followed by two "perceived" conservatives."
It is obviously true that Rice was tailor made for the job she is in, and that she supports (if not creates) the WOT. And thank goodness.
It is also true that she has never repudiated her pro choice position, and that she has never run for as much as school board. For better or worse, campaigning is a very different school which most Secretaries of States (even great ones) would have no clue as to how to go about it. It is also true that she continually says that she is not running.
My only point is that if that is our favorite....then we have problems.
I want a conservative who has proven he can get elected, and who (like Reagan who ran briefly in 1968, and hard in 76) actually wants the job.
Currently no one fits that mold. Not even close.
FWIW, I wrote in Tancredo last time...
The author did...the inconsiderate poster didn't!!!
I'll opt for Old Lace...
Distinguished looking, and ardently pro-life, Pence looks like presidential material to me. Do you know if he's put out any feelers?
If not, Pence should definitely be considered for a draft.
MIKE PENCE (R-Indiana)
Pence family.
You are sadly mistaken. McCain has four things going for him: he is perhaps the only sure winner against Clinton; the open primaries in Michigan and New Hampshire greatly strengthen his candidacy; he has an outstanding pro-life record with much of the base; and the news media loves him (at least until he is nominated),
If the GOP apparatus believes that McCain is the only way to prevent a Clinton presidency, he will be nominated in a New York minute, with support from President Bush.
Seriously, whom would you prefer executing the war on terror and appointing federal judges? Clinton or McCain?
I would hold my nose and vote for McCain if that is what it takes to prevent a Clinton presidency.
Rudy has his inaugural ball gown picked out already, too. Rudy in drag is one of those sure-fire election losers---like Dukakis in the tank, and Kerry in the NASA suit with the condom on his head.
Course, Rudy might get the sexually confused vote (snicker). This is not photoshopped---Rudy really dressed like this.
1) Condoleeza Rice 57
2) George Allen 42
3) Rudy Giuliani 41
4) Newt Gingrich 16.5
5) Mark Sanford 13.5
6) Tom Tancredo 12
7) Tim Pawlenty 10.5
8) Haley Barbour 10.5
6) Mitt Romney 8
10) Bob Ehrlich 7.5
11) Dick Cheney 5.5
12) Mike Huckabee 5.5
13) Sam Brownback 5.5
14) Jeb Bush -3
15) George Pataki -27.5
16) Bill Frist -37.5
17) John McCain -61.5
