President Bush recommends anti-communism book(Mao the dictator)
International Herald Tribune ^

When President George W. Bush met with Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany in the Oval Office this month, the talk turned to Merkel's childhood under Communism, then wandered into the subject of Bush's latest bedtime reading: "Mao: The Unknown Story," an 814-page biography that presents the Chinese dictator as another Hitler or Stalin. The book might at first seem an odd choice for Bush, whose taste in biography, like that of other U.S. presidents, runs to previous occupants of the Oval Office. But it is not so surprising given that "Mao: The Unknown Story" has been embraced by the right as a searing indictment of Communism.

Mao was on the level of Stalin, but mainland chinese think he's godlike. This is the danger we will face in the future. Keep the nukes ready!

It's hard to imagine there's enough 'heat in hell', for a monster like Mao.

"has been embraced by the right as a searing indictment of Communism."

Lol. As opposed to not being embraced by the Left because it is "a searing indictment of Communism".

Hey - don't you know that Mao was just an honest agrarian reformer? Just ask anyone on the Left.

Pay no attention to that mountain of Chinese skulls and that ocean of Chinese blood over there.

How shocking! A communist gets criticized! The author must have missed the last 17 years of World history.

--Mao : A Life -- by Philip Short

This one's a good one, too--although apparently not as complete--

Just added the book to my Amazon shopping cart, although I might wait to purchase it until after it goes softcover. I'm thinking of studying in China this summer, I wonder if this would be acceptable reading material during my trip?!?

If I were traveling to Communist China I would order the book in pseudonym.

I'm not sure how god-like they think he his. The official assessment of of Mao is that he made many mistakes, but that on the whole he was slightly more a force for good. Deng Xiaoping completely reversed Mao's policies. The best quotation a Chinese said of Mao was this (sorry, don't remember who said it, but it's in the Philip Short bio): "If Mao had died in 1956, his achievements would have been immortal. If he had died in 1966, he still would have been a great man. But he died in 1976. Alas, what can one say?"
