RODRIGUEZ: Funny place this Canada of ours. Where else could a guy named Franco Nuovo who speaks French discuss the election with a guy named Jose Rodriguez who speaks English? About that election, Quebecers and Albertans have a lot in common -- we don't like crooks. We're both poised to annihilate the Liberals. Too bad your guy's a separatist.
NUOVO: You're right about Quebecers and Albertans, but does that mean you're a Tory?
RODRIGUEZ: Hey, if you live in Alberta, there's no other choice! The Liberals can't be trusted, the NDP are a bunch of commies and the Green party would cripple our economy. We've had a Conservative government in our province for the past 36 years and the last Liberal elected to Ottawa from Calgary was in 1968. Of our 28 seats, we have one Liberal -- Anne McLellan -- and she's gone after Monday night. Are you a Bloc supporter?
NUOVO:Yes, I am. For a lot of reasons. Because I'm convinced Quebec is a distinct society destined, for many cultural reasons, to become an independent country. Do you want me to be a Liberal? And to be honest, it's impossible for me to vote for Mr. Harper's Conservative party. I'm gay and a few months ago I got married. You can understand, I'm sure, that I don't react very positively when I hear that Harper opens the door to ban gay marriages. So, on one side we have crooks, and on the other we have straights. Who do you want me to vote for?
RODRIGUEZ: Hey, congratulations on your wedding. My invite must have got lost in the mail. But I DON'T believe that a Harper government would remove that right from you. He said it's not a priority issue for his party and he never said he'd abolish it. He only said he would put it to a free vote in the House so that elected politicians -- not appointed judges -- can decide on the law of the land. And, to be honest, I believe there would be enough votes to continue to allow gay marriage.
As far as distinct society goes, I agree Quebecers are different. So are Albertans. So are Newfoundlanders. Doesn't mean they should get their own country. If Quebec does leave, are they going to pay Alberta the millions upon millions we forked over in equalization payments over the years?
NUOVO: Come on, don't tell me Mr. Harper is open to same-sex marriage. This right-wing thinking is worrying. The same way you say that the NDP are a bunch of commies and the Green party would cripple our economy. Don't you think Kyoto is a good thing? Don't you think we have to protect our environment?
And you're right, Quebecers are different, but not different like Albertans or Newfoundlanders are different. We are talking here of a different culture, a different language and different interests. And if you are convinced that if Quebec owes Alberta millions, why don't you leave or let us go? And what about Quebec millions in Ottawa?
RODRIGUEZ: Everyone wants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Kyoto is not the way to do it because many of the worst polluters in the world wouldn't participate. Therefore, Canada would sacrifice its economy and the difference to the world environment would be a spit in the ocean.
Quebec doesn't owe Alberta millions if we remain one country. It's part of what families do for one another. But if you leave, it's a different story. You can't walk out of the restaurant when you're dining alone without paying the bill, Franco.
As far as the millions Ottawa owes Quebec, I don't know what kind of calculator you're using, but you might want to check the batteries. Quebec takes more from Ottawa and the rest of Canada than it puts in. As for Alberta separating, there are plenty of people here who think it's a good idea. I disagree with them. The same way I disagree Quebec should leave.
Anyway, it doesn't matter what me and you think, Ontario always gets to dictate what happens in this country. Sometimes I think they would rather vote in impotent crooks than give someone new a chance. I think they're scared. Chickens. Or, how do you say, poulets?
NUOVO: Oui, poulets.
RODRIGUEZ: Enough for now, Franco; I'll talk to you soon.

While I am hopeful for Canada, I'll keep the celebration in check until after all the votes are counted.

Well said! My cousins in the Maritimes are thrilled to be getting rid of Martin. They hope and pray he's toast by the end of the day.
EH! for Canada! We'll have to have a GLOAT-fest later on in celebration.
I think it very likely they'll vote in the Conservatives for a term or two, but will be right back with the Liberals as soon as they cough up some new, untainted candidates.
The Canadian Stalinists are going down in flames.
My gosh. They sound like Terrance and Phillip without the gas.
Canada Ping!
Please FReepmail me to get on or off this Canada ping list.
In that case I hope and pray you have a LOT of cousins in the Maritimes. ;)
Kudos to our conservative friends in Canada....hope the election continues to trend conservative.
"GLOAT-fest"
Where's Glenn Beck when you need him.
I'm afraid you're right. Winning the election is the easy part, governing will be a whole other kettle of fish.

I do! All they know how to do is reproduce up there..LOL!
Perhaps you haven't met my other cousins, Deansabooza and Clarksasnooza. They are still hanging around since election 2004, on the net somewhere...LOL.
