I'd still like to know when they're getting those cool-looking laser guns I saw pictures of on one thread...

I'd like a Maser system, cook the enemy with a megawatt of microwave energy from a distance.

...a gun that can fire 240,000 rounds per minute...
So who gets to haul the 5 minutes worth of ammo?

So who gets to haul the 5 minutes worth of ammo? No kidding!
The good news is that the new gun is light, and shoots very fast.
The bad news is that one person can only carry two and a half seconds of ammunition.
To: AD from SpringBay
Exactly. The rate of fire doesn't really help you after a certain point--the ammo handling requirements just become far too complicated. Now, the lessened recoil capabilities could help with accuracy, and that really can make a difference at the tactical level.

That's compared to 60 rounds per minute in a standard military machine gun.Hunh?
This Metalstorm company has been around for awhile. Wonder what the holdup is. My assumption is some sort of heat dissipation problem.

Will this be an even more offensive weapon than Bill Clinton's heat seeking moisture missile?

Maybe they could assemble one or two in orbit and fit it with an hour's worth of ammo - on standby with laser guidance systems, just in case - reload via shuttle.

I understand that's been a problem with caseless ammunition. No shell discharged = less heat removed from weapon after firing.

So who gets to haul the 5 minutes worth of ammo? It'll have to be a fixed position, I guess. It's still a good bet to replace the phalanx guns on our larger ships.
To: AD from SpringBay
"So who gets to haul the 5 minutes worth of ammo?" One can understand why these guns have to be in battery. No one is gonna carry that much lead around, but the suysytem will likley change aircraft wesaponry and be deployed in fighting vehicles and ships.
I mean a vehicle stacked with 100 million rounds could cut its way right through a building and out the other side!
It could kill thousands of people in a riot or crowd as well. This mother has a very black side.
One or two guys with enough ammo could hold off a lot of people and make low altitude air attack pretty difficult.
