Attack on gas pipeline is 'sabotage by Russia'
news telegraph ^ | 1/23/06 | Nick Allen

President Mikhail Saakashvili accused Moscow of serious acts of "sabotage" yesterday after explosions ripped apart gas pipelines cutting off supplies to Georgia and neighbouring Armenia.

Mr Saakashvili said the blasts were the "attempted sabotage" of his country's energy system and dismissed Russia's explanation - that the attacks were the work of "extremist groups" intent on causing "material damage" - as "unconvincing and contradictory"....

"They happened at the same time, and basically they didn't affect supplies to Russia proper, so we can conclude that it was a very well-organised act."

I guess Putin couldn't use the "market price" excuse again (Russians pay 95% less for their gas) and blame the Ukrainians - this time the "terrorists" shut off the gas.

I am just shocked.
How COULD this happen?!

Is it a coincidence that Gerard Schoeder, former PM of Germany and former communist, was just appointed CEO of Russia's national energy enterprise?

He would certainly have the experience and understanding of just how hard this would hit Russia's neighbors and the repercussions of this move on Western Europe.

Ask the Poles and the Ukranians what happened the last time a German and Russian leader (Hitler and Stalin) shook hands.
I can't really blame Putin for grabbing every bit of power that he can. The world was distracted by 9/11 and the War on Terror, just as we were distracted by the Great Depression while Hitler rose to power.

As far as 9/11 goes, if somebody did MIHOP, Putin is a much more likely suspect than GWB.

Ask the Poles and the Ukranians what happened the last time a German and Russian leader (Hitler and Stalin) shook hands.

1. Ukrainians became united in a single country.

2. Poles lost the part of their previoius empire they conquered before in 1920.

And, the USSR received a strategic opportunity of the extra territory it could use for retreat lately. That could be crucial for the result of the WWII.

"Stalin was SOVIET not russian leader."

How far do you have to travel from the Kremlin before you start finding Russians? Are they all in Crimea?

Some was there. Maybe drivers, plumbers, security and so on.
But the members of Politbeurau mostly were not russians except few. Stalin, Trotskii, Kamenev, Zinoviev, Beria, Kaganovich, Dzerzhinskii, Menzhinskii and so on and on.
Not russians! It is very stubborn fact that soviet leadership wasn't russian since they fought and won Civil war over russian White Force.
Until Gorby there were not russian leader of USSR.

My history must be getting fuzzy.

The way I recall history, the Ukranians got enslaved and starved by Stalin, then treated like cattle by the Germans, whom they initially welcomed as liberators.
Probably one of history's greatest blunders- the Germans could have pretended to be liberators for a while, recruited Ukranians and leftover White Banner types to fight against Stalin, then turned on them once the USSR was defeated.
Poland got their payback and then some for ending up with Prussia after WWI. Remember, Gdansk (home of Lech Walesa and the Solidarity movement) was originally the Prussian city of Danzig. Attacked by both Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, Poland still held out longer than France. Then after the war, they ended up under the boot of the Soviets.
The failure of the German army to conquer Soviet Russia was due more to Hitler's thundering incompetence at every level, rather than Russia's ability to retreat indefinitely.
True, Stalin did make a good move by stripping factories of their equipment as the Germans advanced, and rebuilding them beyond the range of German bombers (Hitler never ordered the development of a long-range bomber like the B-17.) Had the Germans been able to hinder the production of T-34 tanks and artillery shells, it would have been a whole new ballgame.
