True. The Soviet Union liked to setup the SA-2 SAM with six launchers spread around at equal points in a large Star of David pattern. High value targets would be protected by a ring of these sites. In the late fifties and early sixties it made finding ICBM sites easy to find, just look for a Star of David pattern, within a set radius you would find another Star of David. Then you knew where the circle ran, figure where the other stars would be and find them. Go to the center of the circle and voila, there would be the ICBM.

Don't tell anybody but the US Army is sometimes equally "predictable" - and foolish.

In the 1940-50's we built our anti-air rocket sites (many with nuke bombs on the missiles to destroy B-17-like 1000-plane bomber fleets!) - right ON TOP OF the old Luftwaffe air bases and defense sites in West Germany.

So, of course, the Soviets (and East Germans!) knew exactly what to target first.

Then, as Hawk missiles replaced Nike-Ajax and Nike-Hercules, the Army put THOSE missile radars and "not-very-portable" launchers and controllers on top of the old Nike missile bunkers.

Then, as Patriot missiles replaced Hawk launchers and control radars, the Army put THOSE missile radars and "not-very-portable" launchers and controllers on top of the old Nike missile bunkers, that were already targetted since the 50's.

In Vietnam air raids against Russia radar missile defenses, the first few B-52's would get through with few losses - even with their bomb bay doors open flying a slow speeds: if they went faster there'd be structural and door damage. BUT - because of targeting rules from the Pentagon/Johnson's White House, the remaining bombers would meekly drop into the same approach line one after another, the ones in back would be receiving 3-4 missiles per plane.

My professor gave a fantastic example that had me laughing myself to death. He said that at the start of the war in Iraq, lots of libs thought it would be a great idea to go create human chains around all the military installations in Iraq.

Until, of course, they realized that if they were killed in a US strike, the "evil, fascist Bush" wouldn't be responsible for their deaths, but instead Saddam would.

I really, really hate to say this, but didn't the US govt. have a habit of putting a number of federal facilities in close proximity to day care centers (Murrah building in OKC for example) ?

The Murrah building was located in a run-down more or less old warehouse district in OKC. The daycare center in the Murrah building would be considered a building amenity/ employee convenience---esp. considering that most of the employees had a lengthy commute to work from the 'burbs.

I like to point out that if the US was going to sustain a million casualties invading Japan, then Japan would have sustained probably at least twice that number, so the nukes saved Japanese life as well as American. Just because that was probably not his prime consideration at the time doesn't make it less true.
