Hey gang look!!! A local girl is going for Miss America.

Care to Root her on???

Miss Arizona Audrey Sibley

Buena High grad hopes to bring Miss America title home

Herald/Review

SIERRA VISTA — While most of the state’s population will be rooting for Miss Arizona during tonight’s Miss America contest, none will be cheering louder than the people of Sierra Vista.

When Audrey Sibley takes to the stage at the Aladdin Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas, she will be hoping to bring the crown back to her home city.

And although she faces stiff competition from the other state representatives, her supporters believe she could have a shot at the title.

“I think she does have a good chance of winning,” said Lisa Sutton, Sibley’s roommate who is also from Sierra Vista. “But I think what it will boil down to is the girls who really want it and who have worked really hard for it.”

Sutton, Miss Sonoran Desert 2005 who competed in last year’s Miss Arizona pageant, is in Las Vegas to support her friend.

“I haven’t been able to talk to Audrey, but I spoke to her mom and everything seemed really positive,” she said. “I’m sure she’ll be feeling nervous, but I think that nervousness will help her to compete.”

Joining Sutton in Nevada was Miss Sierra Vista, Brandi Milloy, who admitted she would have liked to have been on the stage tonight.

Milloy also competed in the Miss Arizona competition, as Miss Southeast Arizona. “I would love to be up there,” she said. “I want this coming year to be my year and I want to win Miss Arizona in June. There has never been anyone who has gone to the Miss America pageant as Miss Sierra Vista.”

In the meantime, Milloy said she hoped her friend would be crowned Miss America. “Audrey left me a phone message and she is doing well. She’s excited and focused,” she said.

“She’s already been selected as a finalist for a Quality of Life Award, for her community work, which just illustrates what kind of girl she is. But she will be up against a tough crowd.”

Milloy added, “I’m really excited to be attending Miss America. I hope it will inspire me to work hard for Miss Arizona. I would love to be up there next year.”

If Sibley wins she will be only the third Miss Arizona to win the contest since the competition began in 1921, following in the footsteps of Jacque Mercer in 1949 and Vonda Van Dyke in 1965.

The 20-year-old, a Buena High School graduate whose parents Geneva and Tom live in Hereford, will be singing the Heart hit “Alone” during the talent segment and her platform issue is Be Aware: Preventing Child Abduction and Exploitation.

Sibley is no stranger to pageants, having previously held the titles Miss San Marcos, Miss Southeast Arizona and Miss Pima County.

In an interview with the Herald/Review last year, before taking part in Miss Arizona, she said, “I just love to compete. But you also win scholarship money and get a chance to be more involved in the community. My ultimate goal would be to become Miss Arizona and then to win Miss America would be just phenomenal.”
