The editors of most of Californias metro newspapers will gather in Santa Barbara next month to have a few drinks and compare notes.
They will wring their hands wondering why their readers are fleeing.
They will show each other the beautiful new products theyve developed and the other-than-English material that they produce in an effort to retain subscribers.
They will discuss in serious tones the threat from the liars on talk radio and the amateurs on the blogosphere.
I could offer them some advice, but I have not been invited.
Although I am a former colleague and remain friends with some of those in attendance, I dont qualify for membership.
Because I am a former insider who questions their liberal leanings, the editors gathering in Santa Barbara have a lot of elitist disdain for me.
My other newspaper friends wonder how I have drifted so far out of the mainstream.
Of course I dont believe they are in the mainstream.
They honestly believe they cut it right down the center.
Quit trying to impress each other and try to impress your readers.
Just as Hollywood types make movies to impress other movie-makers and are bleeding massive quantities of dollars for doing it,
journalists write for each other and are bleeding massive quantities of dollars because of it.
Quit being so effing arrogant.
You sit in your news budget meetings deciding what we need to read, not what we want to read.
Youre not here to change the world but to report on events happening in it.
And when you do report what happened, quit trying to promote your liberal agenda ...
Youve neglected your readers for 20 years. Its no wonder they want a divorce.
Its time to get down on your knees, apologize and promise to change.

Want to bet that 100% of these clowns have seen Brokeback Mountain...and that their newspapers are carrying puff pieces promoting it?
The OC Register? Do you read it? My guess is that over 80% of it is simple re-printings from the AP and NYT's.
There are a few conservative commentaries on the OpEd page but the rest is no different from the rest of the print media.
I have gone through both the OC Register and LA Times on the same day and the OC Register is in another class.
I think the fish and chip industry might help them out - or the mob message service where would they be with out yesterdays news paper.
If they want to have improved subscriptions they need to start selling tommorrows news paper today - like the auto industry does.
or they sell only half the story at a time like the soaps do but I hope they don't start selling porn like everyone else.
I find news papaer is pretty good for screen cleaner with a little Windex.
Maybe they will get the hint that it pays to not charge for a papaer full of ad's - so remove the ads and charge more or give it away free - Gee there is a novel idea IE, GOOGLE, Free TV.
Do any freepers feel like pitching in to send them a bouquet and a sympathy card?
Think of it as a wake. And the last one out, turn off the lights.
Sounds like a meeting of the minds(less) going on in Santa Barbara. Should be fun watching the losers blame everyone else but themselves for the loss of their public. Some day the publishers will learn, but it might be too late for them now!
